I believe they were having problems with the calipers. I have an 06 GMC CC and it has the drum with the limited slip differential

Re: 2005-6 Silverado SS Why disc to drums rear-end?

Because they where having problems with the parking brake shoes. On the 99-04 the rear rotors are a top hat design with the parking brake on the inside of the rotor. They redesigned the clip that holds the shoe up and that was supposed to fix the problem but it didn't, it just made the shoes last a little longer. So in 05 they went back to what worked for them.

Had an '01 Sierra C3 (1st Denali truck) and it had the rear discs with the POS "drum in hat" e-brakes....and were rebuilt/upgraded but still didn't work worth a darn.

Yeah my dad had issues with the rear disc parking brakes on his 02. To me though, it seems like from 99-02, to 03-06, there was A LOT of cost cutting changes too.

Talked with my New truck manager, he said GM was having a lot of complaints in regards to towing and brake failure.
