Which Gen III motor?
OK guys I am planning on swapping a Gen III/4L60E motor in my 70, I have a friend who has a whole 01-02 LS1/4L60E swap with wiring, ecu, acc and fuel system for 3500 for everything. Is this a a fair price, i have also been thinking of doing a 6.0. Which would you choose? I know there is not much diff between the 5.7/6.0 in power. Just don't know if i will be able to find a complete swap/ dropout locally.

They do make good boat anchors though They are fine in a stock truck, well not really. A t56 is what I am going with, picked one up for $1100 and a set of 317 heads were threw in the deal.

Re: Which Gen III motor?
I've seen built 4L60Es in 700HP 9 second F-bodies. They can be made plenty strong (though it will cost you)

Re: Which Gen III motor?
I agree on the block. A 6.0 truck block has got to be the best Gen III choice for making big power...short of a racing block. A stock LQ4 or LQ9 6 liter short block will handle around 500-600hp (or more) without issues.
the "heavy duty" 4L60E-HD ('01-'02), later named the 4L65-E ('03 up) is something like 10-20% stronger then a 4L60-E, and are rated for something like 380tq. In addition to that...and they don't come in many vehicles, but if you can find a wrecked TrailBlazerSS (maybe SSR and GTO) the "super duty" 4L70-E in them is rated for 395hp/400tq that its 6.0 LS2 puts out.

Re: Which Gen III motor?
As the owner of a TBSS... Stay away from the 4l70e. We (TBSS owners) are trashing them right and left. Stick to the 4l80e. unfortunately they won't fit in our tranny tunnel so we can't use them.

Doesn't matter if you go 5.7 or 6.0, not much performance difference (stock), add-ons are the same, how they bolt up is the same, phsical size is roughly the same. The only thing you may find is that something with a truck oil pan on it is going to bolt up/fit better than something with a car pan (new truck pan costs around $200 last I checked). The only reason I would pay the extra $$$ for the 6.0 is because it is much more apt to build-ups so if you want to build something big and badass (i.e. lots of xtra $$$$), then go 6.0 as long as it's not an LQ4. Don't get tied up on finding something locally. Shipping (freight) on these engines is usually less than $400, and if you can find someone willing to ship,

Re: Which Gen III motor?
nothing wrong with an LQ4...except the early ('99-'00) ones.

Re: Which Gen III motor?
That's what I'm referring to - the earlier models - I think it's just easier to 'say don't buy it' to anyone who doesn't know any better, as a means to avoid risks.

However, all '01+ F-bodies do have the more desirable LS6 intake. I'll be using a F-body oil pan, cause the truck oil pan hangs too low. It may be different with other motor mount setups though. |

Re: Which Gen III motor?
My bad This was not my understanding, everything I've read stated several changes, of course, none come to mind right now (it's been a couple years since I looked into it), so ....
If you can provide more details, I'd like to learn more.

Re: Which Gen III motor?
We had a 4L60E go at 17k in our stock 02 'burb because we towed a horse trailer with it, but it was replaced for free under warranty

Re: Which Gen III motor?
I was kinda thinkin it was a lil high for the whole setup. I also found a 6.0 LS2 longblock out of a GTO today locally for 2500, but there is nothing with it, no harness, ecu or acc..i'm just not really sure what to do. I would rather go with a stronger transmission if i can...because after all this is going to be my toy and i'm gonna drive it hard everytime i drive it. So i would rather put out a lil more cash up front and have it be stronger when i beat on it.

Re: Which Gen III motor?
4l60 are a great trans. there not made to race.if you plan on building a race truck its cheaper to use a sbc and a 350th or a 400th.if you want just to drive it use a 5.3 and a 4l60.great motor and get good fuel mileage in our trucks

Re: Which Gen III motor?
I used to be up on all the interchangability and options on all LSX motors, but I have been away for a couple years and a lot has changed... I am just trying to get some input on what i should do about putting a gen 3 motor in the truck. I want it to be strong and reliable. I don't mind saving a lil longer to get a better setup either, cause i want it to be right the first time.

Re: Which Gen III motor?
Here is a old thread I started that has tons of info, if you have any specific questions just ask. I made more power than you could get to hook from a 4.8 that I made into a 5.7 so you don't have to get a ls1 or a 6.0 to have something that will get out from under you.

Re: Which Gen III motor?
Well i did some searching and found a '02 LQ4/ 4L80E with all accesories, harness and ecu semi locally for a good price. I put a deposit on it today, it was still in the truck so i got to drive it, i'll go pick it up next week.

Re: Which Gen III motor?
The 4L80E is a better/heavier duty tranny. However, the hookups are slightly different and you have to get the wiring harness to accept that. GM made the 4L65E trannys to fit into that need for something heavier, but not so much that the 4L80E wiring is needed.

Re: Which Gen III motor?
This one comes with the harness and the engine trans are already mated together!
