Frame stripping. Need better ideas.

Ok so the last two days I have been stripping my frame...and I have been using wire wheels and flap discs. I have sanded some too. Is there a faster way? I also have been trying to get the undercoating off to and been a pain. Just looking for an easier way guys.

Any ideas??

are you dealing with rust issues or dirt, mud, grease, gunk issues?

If its years of grease and grime, I used Marine clean from POR-15. It is a degreaser cleaner, strong, strong stuff. Be careful with it when you dilute it as it kinda burns your skin if you get it on there, I know this from experience
spray on, brush with stiff brush and hose off, repeat if needed. worked for me

I used a 3 step process. First, soak it down with oven cleaner, pressure wash, then sand blast.

I liked to use Castrol superclean, then oven cleaner, then do over. After that I went with the wire wheel but I used the tristed wire cup that wnet on the 4 1/2 inch grinder.

Dollar store oven cleaner and a pressure washer. At a buck a can you should be able to get it super clean with 20 bucks and a little bit of elbow grease. Thats how I did the chassis on my panel.

I did start out like most everybody else by using easy off oven cleaner and a pressure washer to get most of the big crap and chunks of grease, then oto the wheels on my 4" grinder
They work really well but they wear out kinda fast. I used 12 of them on my project Frank, but I did every inch of the frame,trailing arms, rear end, front suspention. It was WAY cheaper($50 vrs $200) to do it this way that blasting, but it did take several hours to accoplish.You can click on the link in sig to my build and see pics of how well they work.

I dont have alot of gunk....just rust. The only gunk is the under coating. If I had a sand blaster...I would use it for sure.

Glass beads + sand blaster = win

Do not use any blast media with iron or and other hard in it, only use higher grit media.

there was a thread not too long ago about a sand blasting attachment to a pressure washer. Might be handy if you already have a pressure washer.

Better yet, bring it to a local powdercoat place, they will usually charge an extra 25-100$ for sandblasting stuff for you before they coat it. Powdercoating is much better than paint.

Take it to the local blaster... for the time/effort/money you will have in doing it yourself, it would be a great idea to pay someone and have it done in a day or two.

I guess in a way I am being cheap...but in another way I want this totally to be done by me. I guess I want just my hands on this truck.

So its not really about the money...its a pride thing this time. I want to be able to say...I did everything. I have the time...kinda...Was just hoping for a easier solution.

You guys have come up great solutions to this problem and I appreciate all the replys!

Pressure washer,then take it to the sandblaster and spend $150.Presto,it's done.The sandblaster will get in all the places you can't,and if you disassemble the front and rear suspension, they get all the pieces easily.This is money well spent.Good luck.

You could also purchase a sand blaster/soda blaster from Eastwood Co, which might make this easier.

The quicker we can find you a solution, the easier it will be for me in the future...

Sandblaster doesn't affect undercoat much from what I have seen, sand just bounces off. Putty knife will scrape most of it off fairly easily, kersosene or diesel fuel will disolve it too. Mineral spirits doesn't seem to work near as good as kerosene. Guess I'd remove the undercoat and powerwash, then go from there.

Pressure washer from http://www.tptools.com/. $49.95. Just purchased one from them, going to be using it real soon and will keep you up to date. you do have to have a compressor though. I was told that this works great.

i'm like you, i wanted to do everything myself. i got this small blaster from the cornwell tool truck. if you have a decent air compressor this will work great. you'l find that you can use it to clean up a bunch of parts as well. i used aluminum oxide 80 grit.

Eastwood make a product that will strip off all of the undercoating. After it is cleaned up, you can paint right over the top of rust with POR 15...done!
