How much is a frame off restoration?

This is a question nobody can answer. Its all up to what you WANT to spend. How YOU want the truck to turn out.

Paint,trim, detail can add up to tons of $.
Are you going to do it yourself? Or pay a shop?

like everyone else has said, the price is only limited to what you want to do. same thing goes for how long too. if you want it faster, for a price it can be done.

Again what are you trying to accomplish, 100% stock, or custom?

I would budget $15,000 for labour and another $15,000 for material and supplies. The paint on my 59 GMC was about $1,500 and that was just paint, not all supplies and no labour.

Once you have paid for one the prices people are asking to sell them seem very reasonable.

It can get expensive in a hurry.

My shop quoted my uncle $30,000 for a frame off on a 67 Beaumont, and $50,000 if he was looking for a factory fresh, 100% correct car. This did not include any mechanical work.

As for time, most shops go by how quickly you can pay!

Expect 6 months as a minimum and go up from there.

Finding a shop to do this kind of work can be hard. Most regular shops only work on new stuff, mostly insurance claims.

It is also hard to find a place that will quote you more than their hourly rate because you never know what it there until you get into.

There is an old saying, Build a budget then double it and you will be close. A lot of truth in this.

Are you doing the work, or are you taking it to a shop and giving them the keys to do what it needs?

The paint and body prep is the most expensive. Think of what type of paint do you want, then price the materials. Paint, hardener, thinner, and spray support materials --tape, masking, tack rags, etc... It is not hard to get to a price of $1500.00 to $3,000.00 without anything else included. (as stated above)

What type of quality work do you want done? A fair job will be at or around $2000.00 (paint and basic cleanup) and a really excellent job can be numerically out of your reach. I know some shops that just the body paint job is $20,000.00 and that is not much involved in specialties. The frame cleaning and resto is the HARD work and can cost a lot in labor. I have a friend that has a truck in his garage, that he has $120,000.00 invested. He started with a virtually straight truck and changed out the fenders and smoothed some other items, after that they did the engine and electronics through a custom outlet with the interior being basically plain and simple. The air suspension added anice price tag and the somewhat custom paint. The truck has made the Custom Classic Trucks magazine cover, within the last couple of years.

I would think that a person could get a good resoration for around the $30,000 mark, but would have to hunt to find a shop that will do that kind of work. Most body shops make more money doing the insurance repairs and do not want to take on rebuilds.

I agree with everyone else, if you are going to pay for someone to do it, you WILL PAY for that to happen. If you do it yourself, it will be much cheaper but require an enormous amount of time.

Estimate the price of the parts you want, add 25% more for tools you didn't know you would need or want, than add 50% more to that for items you did't think of and that should put you close to your budget.

At least that is about the formula for mine.

No problem, I keep telling myself that the next one I buy will be one that is finished..... but then you do not know what you have..... but when you look at what you can buy for $15,000 to $20,000, you sure can't build them for that.

If you do it yourself and you have the time and skills to work on it every single day for 8 hours a day, like a job ---- and you have the resources to keep momentum going, as well as good relationships with a sandblasting and powdercoating contractor , you might have a stab at getting a lot done in 3 months --- but as has already been stated though -- the big roadblock is paint of the exterior for most.

Sometimes that alone can take 3 months or more, even when left at a professional shop, for the type of job a frame-off resto would entail

That's the beauty of the whole deal. Get what you want and make it just like you want or buy it that way. It does not stop there. You gotta keep it that way yourself or pay someone to keep it that whey, I ment HEY. That is how they go along. My friend has some 1907 cars and they don't move if someone else doesn't watch them. Our modern day techs are not schooled on these matters. It is a passion that must be with these trucks. Are you wanting the full fledged resto or one to sell for top dollar. Either way you gotta pay somehow. Plus gas.........David

My dad spent over 30k on a 56 chevy car frame up restore, and it still wasnt done when he sold it. It didnt have a fancy engine or anything like that either just the stock I6 and 3 on the tree. It was mostly stock exept paint interior and wheels.

My 70cst is going to cost me about $20,000. This includes: 1) rebuild 402 and tranny, 2) redo complete interior, 3) take cab off and clean/paint frame plus install all new body/cab bushings, 4) install 71 take off bed taken off in 72 (new take off bed cost me $1500) 5) complete body work and paint, 6) new windshield. 7) install cruise and intermittent wipers, 8) new tires, 9) insatall rear disc brakes 10) etc. My 70cst will be a very nice daily driver but not a trailer queen. This does not include the cost of all new/repo trim pieces. The truck was taken to the body shop 1/08 and it looks to be another 3-4 months before the truck will be finished. For the most part the truck will be cosmetically stock but with mechanical improvements.
The body shop that is doing my truck has been in the restoration/rodstoration business for about 35 years. But it has been said….there is no realistic way one can estimate what “your” restoration will cost. There are way too many variables to take into consideration to give you an accurate cost estimate. How am I justifying this expense? Instead of purchasing a new truck I am putting my money into my 70cst and then I will be selling my 99 Taco TRD 4x4 w/56,000 miles.Some say the only way one can really be a true truck enthusiast is to do the work all by themselves. I say how many built their truck from scratch? All trucks came from an assembly plant initially. Holding down two occupations plus being mechanically challenged...For me it is best for safety sake to let someone else do it.

My 72' GMC was a complete frame up rotisserie restoration that took 2 1/2 years and not quite done yet, which I got involved in or it still wouldn't have been done. Parts become very expensive,but is worth it to do it right. My truck is insured for $40,000 with Hagartys insurance Co. and is worth every bit of it, being an origional California 67,000 mile rust free truck with a lot of options.I did get a great price for the restoration or I wouldn't have had it done. It's a lot of hard work ordering parts and making sure everything was being done right, so do your homework and good luck.

I'm glad that some people are willing to put this much time and money into these trucks. I've done it with a Corvette and ended up with something I was afraid to drive... Never again.

Whoever ends up with mine someday will have a lot of work to do! I usually get mine to the 10-footer level, then drive the crap out of them!

on my truck i have spent over $13,000 so far just in parts ! i am doing everything i can myself to keep costs down. the things i'll have to pay for to get done are : machine work on the block and heads, alignment, transmission build , exhaust system work, upholstry work,paint job. the more you can do yourself the more you'll enjoy it.
