Carb trouble!

My truck has been running quite well for a while.I'm getting decent MPG's.But the last couple of days smelled fuel.Removed carb to look, because of small puddle on the intake.Found this crack in the base plate at the P/B port.I don't think this was my current issue, but a hidden one.

Re: Carb trouble!

Any change in performance after you noticed the puddle/smell?

Re: Carb trouble!

On cold start ups it had developed a fast idle.It would settle down in 2 miles from the house.

Re: Carb trouble!

I tore the Q-jet down today, found lots of dirt, crud, ect. Also loose parts.Found that the cracked base plate is cracked clear through.I have that feeling this repair is going to keep building into something bigger than I want right now.

Re: Carb trouble!

From the looks of that crack, it came from over-tightening the vacuum fitting. Tapered pipe threads into aluminum that is not much thicker that the thread diameter itself. That is probably more common than we know.

Re: Carb trouble!

I think you're right on, Longhair.

Sounds like the choke is off. Leaner = faster idle.

You could use a rebuild or replace at this point. It's only been 22 years, or at least it looks like it from that butterfly.

I would replace b/c of the crack, but that's just my $.02. I just don't like cracked carburetors.
