Sticky Wheel

Does anybody know how to stop these old steering wheels from being sticky? I have tried many cleansers and no luck.

Mine way really sticky too. I took off the faux leather wrap looking thingy cause I'd rather have just the stock steering wheel. Thats where my stickiness came from. Anyways, I used some of that "GOO GONE" stuff. It comes in a clear spray bottle and its orange scented. Its not the GOOF OFF stuff (thats solvent based I think.). I sprayed that on the wheel and slid it around with my finger and let it sit for a few minutes. Then I started wiping it off with paper towels and shop rags. The shop rags worked better cause you could really dig hard at the wheel without tearing the rag. It took several coats of this to get the stick off, and a little of it is still there.

goo gone stuff really works well, that of bust out a hot HOT towel and soapy water..
but im too lazy to do that...

Wipe on cow snot and the sticky instantly goes to shiney and slick. Otherwise never had much problem there.

I seal my leather covered and plastic covered wheel with a solution that I purchase at the Tandy Leather company. It is called "Ultrasheen" and it seals the nasty out.

My 75 C10 stock rubber steering wheel gets sticky when the weather changes.

When the humidity and temp are just right the sticky stuff comes out of the rubber.
I tried several chemicals and found that 91% isopropyl alcohol removed the sticky.
The next time I will try using Goo-gone and see how well that works.

Lighter fluid, like in zippo not BBQ. The fluid breaks down the sticky but does not attack the plastic. Goo-gone can attack some plastics. I've used it on clear plastic and it didn't haze it at all.

i dont reccomend alcohol on plastics it's a bit too agressive and hazes
reallly hot water and a hot towel like u see in old barbershop shavings
also!
a cheater way to get grease off stuff is barbosol (or just old school foam in a can) shaving cream, works the residue on smokers dashboards.... .. .
seriously it does!

Dont eat cotton candy driving down the road. I use glass cleaner with ammonia, takes the sticky right away. Like Ron350 said, the sticky comes out of the rubber due to age. The compounds used to make the wheel are just breaking down.

I know this sounds pricey but a good leather wrapped wheel is the "Cat's meow" and they stand up quite well to daily use. There is one on my DD with 250,000 miles on it and there is also one on my GMC SWB show truck. I bought mine through "Yogi's" and got a good price on them.

A shot of carb cleaner then a wipe over with Simple Green has always worked for me.

I've tried several chemicals w/minimal results (after first cleaning w/some simple-green & hot water). I had some PPG urethane reducer in the garage & tried it. It removes the 'sticky' w/o removing the color/dye.

I used rubbing alcohol and soapy water and a lot of elbow grease. It worked, but it sounds like there are plenty of easier way to do it...
