Coolant Recovery In 67-72's?
Did all these trucks came with a coolant recovery bottle? how about the Blazer's? I know my 70 Longhorn has one in it, but did Blazer's also had them? And if so, is it the same as a 3/4 ton truck or different? Thanks!

Re: Coolant Recovery In 67-72's?
I might be wrong, but I don't think they had one originally.
I used one from a 79 Firebird. It fits like it was meant to be there.

Re: Coolant Recovery In 67-72's?
I have seen where people have claimed to have a factory recovery system but in all of the trucks that I have ripped apart, I have never seen one. I think that it is mostly an aftermarket addon. No offense to those of you with the factory system!

Re: Coolant Recovery In 67-72's?
Try Wes with Classic Heartbeat,,,,,,, he has a coolant recovery bottle which I just bought for my truck and it looks like a factory setup..... And just to add,,,, I have never seen a truck with a factory coolant recovery setup and I have had eight different trucks from 1968 to 72.

Re: Coolant Recovery In 67-72's?
there was no factory installed bottle in these trucks, only dealer installed units, and aftermarket ones.

Re: Coolant Recovery In 67-72's?
It did show up first attempt to post a pic!!!! I bought this recovery from aboard vender,,, Wes at Classic Heartbeat.... It's the only bottle coolant recovery setup that GM would have wished they installed from factory. It looks like it belongs on the passenger side of the truck and it matches the windshield washer bottle,,,, It's a great product!!!!!!
Once again it's not original but it looks like it should have been!!!!!!

Re: Coolant Recovery In 67-72's?
Unfortunately I am old enough to have actually work on late 60 early 70 GM when they were new and most didn't come with a puke bottle as we called them. It was a fix for a problem of the hotter running engines dumping there water after they shut off. GM bumped up the running temp to try to get to the imposed emissions levels and it made the radiators puke. So they came up with this bottle and cap that would allow the water to suck back in when it cooled down. I don't think is was standard until mid to late 70's and then not on all trucks.

Re: Coolant Recovery In 67-72's?
Here is the recovery system I designed years ago and sold in large numbers on this board.
GM discontinued the cap, part #340194, so I quit selling them. Notice the price back then. Ask you local GM dealer for this cap & if you find it you can build one from stock/repro parts for about the same price. Psssst...a little trade secret: You can build this same system now using all of the windshield washer parts. Just insert a short piece of washer hose inside the radiator overflow hose and it will work just like the "special" cap. |

Re: Coolant Recovery In 67-72's?
Dealer installed version on my 71, this is the second or third like this I have seen. This is a legitimate GM item as I bought this new old stock and broke the tape on it myself.

Re: Coolant Recovery In 67-72's?
My low budget overflow recovery unit. Parts bought at Lowes for less than $10. The bottom cap was glued and the top one was not. Clamp is from an old fire extinguisher (now painted black) but any metal strap would work.
Since these pics, I have replaced the clear hose for a black rubber one, and rerouted it through the radiator support instead of over it. |
