Re: Good Or Bad Idea
True. I had forgotten about the transmission issue when swaping in a fuel injection setup. After thinking it thru, I guess getting that newer motor to work correctly with an older automatic would be tricky. I have always planned to use a standard trans so I guess I had that stuck in my head. To me that would be easier, just have to get a speed signal to the computer.
You do have a good point about "handyness". If you plan to do a swap like this with parts that are all purchased it would add up VERY quickly. If you can do all the wiring and fabricate some of the smaller brackets and what not it wouldn't be near as bad. You would just have to buy the big stuff.

Re: Good Or Bad Idea
I have a 5.3/4l60e and had a 6.0/4l80e. The wiring will run about $400 to get it trimmed down, then the PCM is another $300 to pay someone to rework it and pull the VATS and other unneeded stuff, then the mounts. The fuel pump is sort of a point of contention, some will run an inline with a stock tank and get away with it, but an EFI tank with baffles and submerged pump is more accepted as the way to do it "right". So a custon tank is $6-800, or some gathering of a late model tank and making it fit into an older appli. You can run a 700r4 behind a LS style motor, the flex plate is costly.

Re: Good Or Bad Idea
Not that I am knocking anybodies ambition for something cool and modern, but my wallet doesn't have that kind of spare Bennys. I figure I can run my 307/350 combo getting 10 mpg for a long time before I come close to the cost of a modern setup. At current prices I would be saving approx 10 cents a mile. So it would take me, I don't know, maybe 25,000 miles to break even. I only drive my Jimmy 4-5000 miles a year at best.
If your not using yours for daily driving I would just suffer.
