Re: Waking up my 350 SBC
Thanks! I'm doing what I know works and is fun to drive. If I want to go get groceries or pick up the folks at the airport I'll take my crew cab 05' Chevy Colorado truck....it's got a 5 cylinder and you can barely hear it run.

Re: Waking up my 350 SBC
I think it needs a turbo or a supercharger or both, with nitrous.

Re: Waking up my 350 SBC
I went mechanical and I will not be going back to vacuum carbs. My truck is a weekend cruiser so the gas mileage issue was a non issue. I also went to mechanical dist also. Have fun with your new hot rod. THe only thing I would have done differently, I should have installed a Hyd. Roller.

I'm impressed. It's painted "Arrest Me Red", so a little ooomph under the hood certainly ain't gonna be out of place.

I am glad this thread has taken a comic turn rather than the other route. Thanks special-K for the 5 cylinder vote! and ...yes Bob picked up that performance blinker fluid yesterday!

Steelhorse ...you better go back and read thru this thread again...My plan is poorly thought out and the performance parts I have bought will do nothing but eat gas, and think of the money you will save when you buy YOUR crate motor, LOL!!!

Re: Waking up my 350 SBC
I think it had 190 hp as it was...absolutely embarrassing to drive. Heads were low compression casting number 333882, which I believe were 1.90 1.54 76cc smog heads. Combine those heads with the dished pistons = Dog!

Re: Waking up my 350 SBC

I am going to say a couple of things, and I hope my post isn't too far down for it to have been said a couple of times before, but when I first read your OP I thought exactly what cdowns thought, then I reread your post and then I saw the bit of info I missed, which was the alum 64cc 2.02/1.60 heads. I think he was going off the fact that you were adding a ton of serious parts to an unknown headed SBC. I do not think he off on his comments about the plan given (I am assuming here as I was thinking along the lines of his post when I first read your OP) he thought you were using an unknown iron head, but his manner of commenting was a bit harsh (I am not defending that at all). Now on to my thoughts, that top end set up sounds like it will be knarly, but you are adding a lot of high dollar parts to an unknown short block, which means it could be bone stock with OE stuff (cast pistons {maybe even dished}, reused rod bolts and cheapy cast rings) that being said, it could grenade the bottom end in short order. If it was just stock rebuild it probably wasn't balanced so anything over 5k rpm (which that cam, heads, intake are going to want to do and up to 6500 rpm) you will be pulling the pin on the grenade and waiting for the boom. A good perf oriented short block can be had for $800 and up and would be a good investment if you want it to hold up to the rest of the parts. Heck you can get a built 383 short block with a warranty for $1000-1500 from GM and many other sources). I am trying to err on the side of caution since I hate to redo anything on my junk. Ultimately this is your ride and you'll do as you want (and so would I), but you asked so we answered. I know your motor will run good and perform better than it does now, as it probably has low compression and tiny cam, iron intake etc. It is just wether you want to risk blowing up the stock bottom end and hurting a head or the cam, etc, etc. If a rod bolt fails you could wreck one or both heads. My gut says to tell ya to sell your motor for whatever you can get for it ($3-500 towards a short block can't hurt, right?) and invest in building a short block or have one built, and a 383 will do more than the 350, see how adding a little more umpff can get out of hand!? Re: Waking up my 350 SBC
I am going to edit, well add on to my response above. I read your OP and then read cdowns, then reread your OP and saw the heads were going to be swapped, I was right there with cdowns till I saw the part about the heads. So, I hit respond and didn't read to the end (I know read it all otherwise you add stuff that is already there) so my thoughts were dead on, just late to the party.
I am adding this to be sure to say, I love both of those trucks and I am with you, but as you found out my advice on not messing with an unknown came to you anyways. A lot of us buy vehicles with an unknown SBC under the hood and some of us start adding, bigger cams, intakes, headers, carb, etc and still have a dog or worse yet build a hot rod that breaks the bottom end. I just try to see that the extra $$$ for a short block makes the $$$ spent on the top end a good investment that'll last. OBTW I don't condone cdowns method of stating his point, even though i am pretty sure it was a matter of not seeing that the heads were going to be swapped. Diplomatic isn't an adverb I'd use to discribe his manner, but neither is mine all the time. BTW did ya ever decide on the 5-speed??? TKO600!!?? I am so getting there!! I am about ready to axe all of my "projects" and focus on my 70RS/SS Camaro with the Vortec 383 I built with a TKO600, and maybe a 72 2wd Blazer with 500ci BBC and a TKO600. When my back is all better from the surgery (should be 8 months or so to be 100%) then i am into the Camaro for sure and probably the Blazer as well!! Can't wait to see picts of Lil Red with it's new fire breather! |

Re: Waking up my 350 SBC
Hey 70...did you read that when the heads were pulled off and that the low compression dished pistons were found and I then bought a brand new rebuilt 3970010 short block lower...w/ new SRP flat top pistons, a forged crank, h beam rods...all the trick stuff from Smith Racing???????? So....the bottom isn't UNKNOWN!!!! And you said I "asked"??? I.... never asked what people thought...I just posted what I was doing. Opinions came flying in like homing pidgions.
Yes TKO 600 is going in the BBC truck. Get that back better buddy!!!! Split bumper 70 rs/ss Camaro???? I will probably never post again about the specifics of my engine building. I find there are so many opinions and some of them with no real validity or merit IMHO, to back up as to what they are saying. I have been building SBC's for nearly 30 years....this isn't my first rodeo. I never asked "Hey what do you think I should do". I do care for this board, just not going to go down this road again about what I'm building under the hood. My bad, didn't realize it would cause the opinions to fly. Everybody, take a deep breath... and now breathe....I promise I won't ask for any money from you to help pay for my toy. She'll go brrrrummmm when I turn the key...it's all going to be OK. LOL!
