So....
Instead of the big block in my wife's '54 I have a "different" idea. Hot august nights car show is in town and I am a little disapointed. I really have not seen anything that has jumped out at me (with a couple of exceptions). Lot's of cool trucks and cars, but kind of the same old thing. Enter new idea.... Ford flathead. I have never seen it done before in a chevy, and I have always loved the flatheads. I know I am going to get a lot of crap from you die hard GM guy's. I have alway's ran chevy engine's in everything I've built, and I am getting the itch to try something different. You've got to admit if you saw a flatty ford in a '54 3100 you would probably do a double take. What do you think? Thanks

Unless someone offers you a completely done and running motor and trans. at no cost, do what you want. I figure that if I'm buy the parts, I'll buy what I want. If you want to think outside of the box, good for you.
Following the "pack" is why most 32 Ford roadster's are red & fenderless with tan interiors, shiny 5-spoke wheels and 350 motors. |

i like the flat heads as well but have you ever thought of a diesel. they are being hot rodded now a days. I saw a cummins from a dodge pull 800 horse and 1200+ torque with stock heads and exhaust... a dual turbo would be nice look. and it's still a straight 6!

I like ford flatties too. Cool lookin and a great rumble with the right exhaust but Honestly, If I went ford engine, Id go fat fendered ford truck too. like a 1951 chopped.

How about a staight 8 olds?? I've always thought a roadster hotrod with a long straight 8 would be cool. If you stick with the flat head find a overhead cam and valve conversion. Or maybe an old nail head buick or firepower hemi??

I have thought about a diesel, but I am not looking for a ton of power, and the extra weight would be unwelcome. This truck is for my wife, and she want's to keep it almost stock height (It will get a small drop), she also want's to keep the straight axle. It does not need to be a speed demon, but I'd like it to get out of it's own way. I just thought the flatty would be a neat idea.

The Chevy I-6 has more than enough RPM's and torque to power the right geared (4 to 6 speed auto) transmission and rear end to match low gear of the transmission, should make for a good MPG for the weight and speed of city and hiway driving.
If you don't have a engine picked out, why not research the V-6 G M world, or maybe a Shortstar with a managment system. My .02 on the flattey is to leave them in the 40's and up grade to something you can drive from coast to coast, It's your money spend it !!

How about a Straight 6 from a TrailBlazer or a Straight 5 from a Colorado. It's your ride do what you want. I'm putting a 348/700r4 in mine.

I've thought about those engines a little, but decided not to go with them. I was thinking about running a hopped up 235, but again, I would like to put something different in it (I will say though, I love the old in line engine's, I've had great luck with them). The other engine's I am considering are a ecotech 4 cylinder, 3.8 supercharged gm v-6, and a cadillac northstar. I really would love to put a northstar in it for the power and mileage, but I thought I'd like the flathead a little better.

personally I think an oddball engine would be interesting. However, being a practical kind of guy it must meet several criteria: power, fuel economy, available parts, and longevity. I believe most rodders would agree that the SBC 350 pretty well meets those criteria. Now if I were building a once a month driver I would want a small diesel engine. It would be both odd, fuel efficient and durable.

Many more years ago than I care to count, a Chevrolet machanic told me that the 261 first series engines had the same cam as the Corvette 6 cylinder. He ran a 261 in a 54 chevy sedan. Whupped up on several unsuspecting Ford V-8s back then.

I dont see the point of putting in a flathead myself. 99 percent of the time the hood will be closed anyway. Do you know flatheads? Do you know the mechanics of building one and keeping them running correctly? It takes quite a bit of modification and money to pump up the horse power to just match a relatively stock Chevy small block.
Im not knocking them. They have their place. I have a V8 flatty and a three speed trans just sitting in case someday I ever want to build a little hot rod (not a rat rod). Then again I also have a 283 with a three speed with OD just sitting...That would be for a much more reliable and easy to source parts for hotrod =) If the truck is going to be your wifes I would certainly put something in there that was going to be reliable first.
