Today must be R-Tard Day!
Ok-here's the backstory. As some of you may know I picked up a '67 SWB GMC a few weeks ago and have been tinkering on it a few hours per week, trying to get it road worthy. Last weekend it came down to yankin' the points and installing a Pertronix ignition module. No worries there. At the same time I pulled off the Edelbrock 1404. cleaned out all the jets, seats, installed new gaskets & accelerator pump and ditched the manual choke setup for an electric retro-fit kit. Again, no major problems there. I had some time a couple days ago and stabbed the dizzy and re-mounted the carb. Got the engine @ #1 TDC to make sure I wasn't 180 out......everything checks out. Hit the key and pop....whir, whir whir.....pop! The SOB won't light off! I check again to make sure the dizzy is indexed correctly. I pull a plug to make sure I'm getting spark- all good there. I've now tried for 3-days to get this POS to fire and all I ever get it the popping and spitting fuel back through carb.
What's da' haps with all this? Obviously I've made a tardtastic mistake somewhere. Any advice on how to remedy my situation? See....the timing mark is pretty close to TDC And the Rotor is pointing slightly ahead of the #1 Wire tower.

stick you finger in the #1 spark plug hole and turn it over till it blows it out...

You need to look at your Chiltons again.... I think you are 180º out.

+1 for the 180 out, also have you double checked your firing order? 1-8-4-3-6-5-7-2
It is simple to check 180 out, turn the distributor around 180 degrees and try again.

What I do is to remove all of the spark plugs so the engine is easier to turn over. Then with my finger in the #1 piston spark plug hole, I use my 1/2 inch ratchet to turn the crank until I feel air pressure on my finger.
Then I know that I'm approaching TDC. I then insert a long screw driver so I can feel the top of the piston as it's coming up and keep turning the crank until the piston reaches the top. At this point your crank pulley groove should be at TDC. Check that the rotor is pointing to #1 spark plug. If all is correct you have other problems. Ignition, valves or worn cam. Now that all the plugs are out, it's a good time to check the compression on all the pistons. |

Great advice, but I'd add to this part only while turning it over BY HAND!! I know a guy that bent the valves with screwdriver because he was bumping it over with the starter. He said he had to because he was by himself! I told that was even more of a reason to turn it over by hand!

Point the rotor to the number one cylinder on the left side. The number one on the right side (#2) always makes mine pop. Wires go clockwise not counter clockwise like I sometimes do.

I gotta say you guys are the coolest peeps on the planet! Thank you so much for your advice. I went out, grabbed my trouble-light, pulled the dizzy and put it back 180 off and wham-o, she came to life! Still out of time a bit, but at least she starts- I'll get her all timed up tomorrow. Normally, I would berate myself for being such a reknob, but I'm glad ya'll are here to help us less experienced guys out.....Thanks again.
