Anyone ever use one of those company's to get a title?

I'm looking at a 91 Chevy Truck to buy. The guy says he doesn't have a title. The story is that it was his dad's, but do to issues with the will or lack of, or ? he can't get one through the state. However, he recommended getting one through a company that specializes in titles. He mentioned a company in Alabama.

His story sounds fishy, but assuming I can confirm it (the fact that it was his father's) through a few phone calls (it's a small town!) has anyone ever used one of those title company's to obtain a title?

And the only reason I'm messing with it is, it's a swinging deal.

i've gotten a few titles thru broarway title for vehicles (cars trucks and bikes) from the 30's and 40's// i think you'll find most of the bigger title companies wont touch a new truck like you're looking at

I believe cdowns is right. If there`s no title due to an estate dispute you could still end up losing it even if you could aquire a title through channels. If he`s entitled to the truck he should have the title. If it`s a matter of being tied up for awhile he`ll just have to be patient.I`d walk and find one with a title.

I'm pretty suspicious by nature. I agree with the "if it's too good to be true" statement. I still need to make a few calls though.

I found broadway title online. They said I needed to call my local DMV with the VIN and check the status of the title.

Even if you did go through Alabama that truck is not old enough. It has to be pre 1975 and then if the title is in someone elses name they can not help you anyway.

Re: Anyone ever use one of those company's to get a title?

I used greenlighttitles.com once, they did a great job for me. My problem was little different as the title existed but the owner was deceased, but their specialty is missing title.

Re: Anyone ever use one of those company's to get a title?

You should not be doing anything to get the title...He should be providing you with a clean, clear, legal title...however he gets it should be his problem, not yours.
Don't get involved in title manipulations. I pass up a lot of great "no title" deals to avoid the legal hassles.

Re: Anyone ever use one of those company's to get a title?

Thanks for all the good advice. I spoke with him again and I'm supposed to go over and get the VIN to call the DMV. I agree he should be doing all the leg work, but some people need a little help. And yes, I've passed up a few good deals too, usually I won't even entertain a vehicle without a title. But this guy is just down the street, so I'm trying to remain optimistic.

And FYI, broadway title says that can help on vehicles that are pre 1992 through an affiliate in another state.

Thanks again.

Thats new. Alabama (as far as I knew) was a bill of sale only on pre 75 vehicles. No title was issued back then.
I wonder what they are doing now for 75-92?
