NEW PAINT on Southpa's truck!

Well folks, I finally got it all one color. I know I could have done a better job on the fairing end but was beginning to overstay my welcome at my friend's place. He was starting to complain about the dust, noise and smell. I could have wiped some fairing dye (or at least shot a different color primer) over the high build primer before boarding. Instead I opted to take the "thats good enough" approach and went ahead and board sanded then spot filled primer by sight and touch. Of course I missed a few spots but it still looks really good from over 10 feet away.

I sanded the nastys away with my palm sander armed with 60 grit. Filled the obvious with bondo skim coats and pretty much had to rebuild an entire wheelwell arch from scratch. Then shot it with 2 coats of non-sanding epoxy primer. Then 3 heavy coats of urethane enamel high build white primer. Then I got a friend over who is a REAL painter and he shot two heavy coats on the top, skirts and rims (in white) and the body in hugger orange using Imron polyurethane enamel. This paint is the bees knees, hard as rock and mostly meant for use on boats.

Anyway, after all those years of saying "gonna paint the truck this fall" its finally done and, considering the time and circumstances, I'm quite happy with the results. I figure the black grill does a VERY good job of enhancing that "custom sport truck" look. Now I have to find some trim alternatives, no way is the old stuff going back on that truck and $750 is a little on the steep side for a new trim package...ouch!

Beautiful paint!! The black grill kinda makes it look like there is no grill, at least in these pics.

Looks good.
Question for you, is the truck originally white/orange/white? My 70 has it listed like that and i don't think it is very common... Eric

Re: NEW PAINT on Southpa's truck!

I saw a 69 panel wagon done up with a white grill and thought "ew", sort of looked like an ambulance. Hugger orange definitely WAS a Dupont paint code used on Chev/GMC around 69-70, not sure about the two-tone thing. I was toying with the idea of bringing my truck back to its original dark bronze as it was a rarely used color. But someone (a PO) had painted the truck over in Chevy orange, then I got a hold of it and started changing doors and body panels (green doors off a 72, burgundy driver's bedside from a 67, etc.) So I stuck with the orange because I didn't want to have to pull the box to paint in between.

That's a very nice lookin' truck. I agree with the others, a white grill would look perfect!

Re: NEW PAINT on Southpa's truck!

start with the outer (high) parts of the grille and leave the innerpart black , that should make it less like an ambulance
