1971 gmc 1500
I finally got me one
1971 GMC 1/2t 2wd longbed. 350/700r4 Been swapped to HEI distributor. Few rust sports, about back wheel on passenger side, rocker panels, and passenger cab corner. I dunno who did it but someone moved the gas tank from the cab to the driver side under the bed, it looks like they just got some metal pieces and welded it together, never put a sending unit in it so I have no earthly idea when I'm almost out of gas, but I've found a tank straps and sending unit for $200 on LMC. Runs solid, nice flowmaster exhaust, hooker headers, nothing to extreme :P Was a daily driver for the guy I bought if off of so I'd say by the odometer it's got 105(?)k mi on it, original block just different heads intake and carb. Suggestions and comments welcome.... Last edited by MonteSS454; 09-10-2008 at 06:37 PM. |

Re: 1971 gmc 1500
looks like a very nice truck.
The fuel tank was a very common dealer job. Although, they usually left the tank in teh cab. That may have been removed recently. |

Re: 1971 gmc 1500
First mods done today.....
Well I took off the tailgate (Took me a bit to figure it out, it doesn't pop off like my 98 1/2 ton :P) and put one of those line of fire led brake/blinker light bars on the bed and got some pretty 3" chrome tips put on instead of just pipe. I plan to put new belts on it Saturday, any advice on how to do it? I haven't messed with an older 350 like this in a loooong time, I'm to used to serpentine belt driven vehicles :P |

Re: 1971 gmc 1500
Just loosen up the brackets and replace, no need for measuring the old belts cuz if you tell the auto parts store what year and what it's for (alt, PS, AC) they'll get you the right size. As for how tight to put them, I don't know the exact measurment, but when you apply pressure to the belt it shouldn't deflect more than about 1/4 inch, AC might need to be a little tighter. Also most auto parts stores carry this little can of stuff called belt dressing, might be a good idea to pick some up so you can spray it on the belts to keep them from making noise.

Jtrux, I work at O'Reillys
Does the power steering pump pivot like the compressor and alternator to lose the belt? Another question, what size gauges will work to replace my 4 small ones and my 2 big ones? |
