Original Floor Mats

Does anybody make re-pop floor mats for our trucks? I have floor mats that match the truck interior (blue) and has a picture of our truck in the middle. The carpet inserts are getting worn and was thinking of replacing them if available.

Tell me what you know.

Thanks

Re: Original Floor Mats

This is where I ordered my floor mats from for my '69. They have a variety of styles, colors, and even offer embroidered logos. Very good customer service! Fast shipping! And great product!

Re: Original Floor Mats

Here are the floor mats that I was talking about. I was talking to my FIL and he believes that these were bought in 73, so they may be the 73-87 model truck which looking at the picture closely, does resemble a 73-87 than a 67-72. What are your thoughts?

Re: Original Floor Mats

Neither sets pictured are original, the original set has a bowtie in the center and are very much like the cars of the same period. The set offered by the Paddock are the only ones that I have seen that are correct in appearance. I bought a set at one time from a member but they were to far gone for what I wanted. The new model chevy truck mats are a nice mat to use, they have Gm in the center and fit well. These are what I am currently using in my bb truck, but intend on getting a set from the paddock the GM run around $50, the original type are approx. $100

Re: Original Floor Mats

The one that came with my Dad's 68 GMC (although he was the second owner, it was only six months old when he got it) were green to match the interior.

The mat went across the entire floor and said "GM" in the middle on the hump. I know this because I rode in the middle of that bench seat with no seatbelt for about 16 years. Dad smoked a pipe and mom smoked 100s and we weren't allowed to roll down the windows. But I digress.

I'm almost certain that they said GM and not GMC, and either way they were clearly from the manufacturer. Whether they were a factory or dealer option or just an accessory I can't say.

I don't think my Dad's truck had carpet, so perhaps that's what they gave you in lieu of carpet.

They were a heavy duty rubber, pretty thick, like they were made in America - because they no doubt were. But they weren't attractive.

I wonder if the same mat fits buckets?

Maybe some of the old timers like FirstOwner69 (old in the sense of buying these trucks new) might recall.

For now I'm sticking a Camaro mat in there to protect things, but would indeed like something correct and not modern.

Re: Original Floor Mats

Here are the OER (I've had good luck with that brand) units from Classic Industries. The chevy logo won't do me any good, but if you want two-piece accessory units they appear correct.

Re: Original Floor Mats

When will people get smart and start calling these GM Trucks? Remember GMC? The grand daddy of American trucks? They make all this bowtie stuff and rarely anything GMC. If they just put GM on things (like GM does) they could have one product to cover two brands. Sell more stuff...get it? It's not like a Chevy guy can't already have more bowties on his truck than a Laurel & Hardy movie.

Hmmm... As an "OLD TIMER" (I was 24 when we bought the truck new in Nov., 1969), I don't recall mats being offered as a factory option. They were probably available from GM as an accessory. I bought a set of aftermarket rubber mats, probably from K-Mart, and still have them. I now have a pair of 80/20 loop carpet mats made by ACC and purchased from Rock Auto. They would have worked OK as made (did I mention I'm a bit of a perfectionist?), but they didn't fit around the accelerator pedal well. I called ACC, and they told me they use a generic pattern for that time period. I was able to modify them by cutting the stitching on the binding in the area where it contacted the pedal, trimming some of the carpet away and re-stitching by hand using heavy duty thread. I did not have to cut the binding. They would probably work fine in a 71 or 72 without modification. They are very good quality and match the carpet perfectly. You almost don't see them.

Re: Original Floor Mats

I'm not aware of any factory or dealer accessory mats on these trucks. I believe back then car makers left that up to the aftermarket.

That would contradict my example of the GM mat in my Dad's truck, unless you believe that to be an aftermarket unit from Generic Mats, not General Motors.

Mat, front floor 15.280, 16.802
Mat, rear compartment 15.294
Mat, rear floor 15.292
(etc)

Option codes X52 and X57 (Interior convenience group) includes floor mats.

As for actual part numbers, I can find "Mat - Toe and Floor Board" and then all of the various colors (black, olive, blue, etc).

No idea if "Mat - Toe and Floor Board" is a floor mat. But there are different part numbers for buckets vs bench, they vary by TH400 or not, and so on.

Re: Original Floor Mats

I think the "Mat - Toe and Floor Board" refers to the non-removable rubber floor covering that was replaced by carpet on the high trim levels. That "mat" would have been black on base models and color keyed to the interior on midgrade models. It's possible that an aftermarket supplier was making "removable mats" with a GM logo under license from GM which could explain the removable floor mat in your Dad's truck.

Re: Original Floor Mats

If you look on eBay you can find GM NOS floor mats for trucks up to 65 and from 73 on. Is the conjecture here that they somehow stopped from 67-72?

I'm not certain why folks are so confident that the mats were all aftermarket. Here's a picture of the GM catalog page for my 2+2. I don't have the truck one, but presumably someone does. Until we see that brochure and find them missing, I'm sticking with my theory that GM made them.

Re: Original Floor Mats

1970 car accessories, including GM mats. The exact same as in post #14 above. Now granted it says for "Chevrolet, Chevelle, Chevy II, Corvair and Camaro" but this is the car accessory catalog.

So now we know that Chevrolet offered GM factory accessory mats in 1970 for cars. Still can't prove it for trucks, but would the dealer really not sell you these mats for your truck? Clearly if they fit today and OER is selling them for trucks, they fit back then too.

Generic Mats. They're still in business, but I heard they had to get bailed out back in '08 . I'm not exactly confident. I don't recall for sure, but I do believe they weren't offered for these trucks. I base that on being around long enough to buy my first '72 in '73 and owning these trucks ever since. I've looked at a lot of original trucks since back when that was nothing uncommon. We may be saying the same thing only different. Those Classic Industry mats shown are great reproductions of the GM Accessory mats offered in cars during this time. The dealer would let you buy anything you wanted, but I think GM didn't offer mats specifically for these trucks. The car mats would work pretty well, since cars had flat wide floors back then, like a truck. I only have a '71 dealer ordering book and that info may not be conclusive, but no mats are offered for any vehicle from Vega to 90-series from factory. There is a difference between "factory original" or "factory option" and "GM accessory" and "dealer accessory". Some GM accessories were the same part as a factory option that they offered for people to add on a vehicle that it didn't come with. Think wheel covers, radio, etc. The difference between factory option and GM accessory on such items is whether it is on the SPID or not. There are GM accessories that were never offered as an option offered in the catalog. Think Ventshades, bumper guards, etc. Then, there are dealer accessories that may not be offered in the GM catalog, but from Silver Book, local vendor, etc. I have the 67,69,70,and 72 GM Truck accessory catalogs and they all show those exact same car mats offered for El Camino but none show them offered for trucks. I didn't look in the parts book,so I still could be wrong. I wouldn't go by what some Ebay seller says.

Re: Original Floor Mats

The we probably agree - GM offered accessory mats during this period but they were no more specific than brand (Chevy logo, Buick logo, etc). And I don't think I've ever seen a GMC one, though that doesn't mean they never existed.

After all, if they're selling the same mat for the Firebird as they are for the Bonneville Brougham, they're not exactly tailor fit!

Re: Original Floor Mats

I have a '72 accessory catalog for all Chevys, not just trucks. It shows:

Black.................All except Corvette
Dark Blue...........All except Corvette
Medium Pewter...Chevrolet & Chevelle
Covert..............All except Corvette
Dark Saddle.......Chevrolet & Chevelle
Dark Green........All except Corvette
Black................Front Corvette

All but the Corvette one shows a PN for rear as well as front. So,you could just buy front. But I guess there we mats specific for full-size & mid-size and another for the others. I guess you'd use the Chevrolet & Chevelle ones since they'd be the biggest.

All I was saying is GM didn't offer mats for trucks. Nowhere in any of this do they show mats as available for trucks. They specify some other models, then offer (smaller I assume) mats for non-specified models and even in the truck-only catalog they list them for El Camino, yet not trucks. The El Caminos would be the Chevrolet & Chevelle front-only mats. It's like they didn't want us putting mats in our trucks, but times were rebellious and some defied the corporate giant and put car mats in their trucks anyway! Power to the people!!!
