manual tranny staying in gear????

Why would my 4 speed tranny be "stuck" in gear? Right now it's in the rolling chassis but when I fire up the engine it turns the transfer case no matter if the shifter is in neutral or not. When I had it out did it somehow get "stuck" in gear? The shifter moves fine like it should it...

any ideas?

Re: manual tranny staying in gear????

Could it just be the gear oil dragging the gears and not actually in gear? When the engine is off if you try to turn the output shafts will they move or are they definately engaged to the engine?

Re: manual tranny staying in gear????

are your drive shafts attached? it not then usually it will spin due to the thickness of the gear oil in the transfer case..

Re: manual tranny staying in gear????

no driveshafts attached, i'll try to spin the tranny with it the engine off.

The TC shouldn't move at all if the tranny is in neutral, but it does...

If I put the TC in neutral then the yokes stop...

Re: manual tranny staying in gear????

It will spin the yokes though if there are no shafts hooked up, kinda wierd I know but it does. It's kinda like a Backhoe if you have ever watched one while it's digging, the rear wheel will spin when it is lifted up on the stabilizers even though it is in neutral. If you hook up your shafts I promise you it will stop spinning!!!!
