Wood for 8.5' bed
Hello All,
My wooden bed is shot, should I attempt to cut and mount the wood myself, or would you all recommend a kit (they are pricy!)? Thanks all in advance for any opinions Rick |

You can do it yourself. I've done 2 short beds. There are alot of options from plywood all the way to mahogany.

I did plywood and even though it turned out beautiful, I think I would go with a solid oak kit next time. I just think it would hold up better.

I would do it if I were you it's not as hard as you think all you need is a good table saw and router my brothers and I used ash for the step side bed and it looks great. Here are the profiles that you have to cut with your router. These were for a stepside I think they are the same for a regular box.

There is a guy on ebay that sells unfinished grooved correct size bed wood. He has the "longhoorn" length wood.I researched doing it myself and with the cost of just the wood at a lumber yard ......this guys wood and shipping was about the same price but its ready to finish sand and go. If you have a nice woodworking shop and a way to get nice wood for cheap...go for it......but add it all up AND YOUR TIME....you probably wont do better than here. if you cant find him on ebay send me a note and i will look his info up. His kit worked out perfectly for me!.

Actually you can do it with just a table saw. The late Ford stepsides all came with 3 pieces of Plywood but it was a good quality plywood.
