marker lights: always on or blinker??

I'm to the point where i'm figuring out my side marker light wiring on my 69. The front i just have the marker lenses, no wiring, and on the rear its been hacked up pretty bad.

My questions is, do the front markers blink with the blinkers only? and what about the rear?? Seems from what wiring i have left, they come on with the lights, but don't blink or anything else.

Whats going on here??

Re: marker lights: always on or blinker??

They are usually just tapped in to the park lights (brown wire, I think). No blinky, just steady burn with the running lights or head lights.

My 72 front side lights go on with the parking lights and blink with the signals. The rears do not blink.

Re: marker lights: always on or blinker??

They are identical on every one I have messed with, front and rear. They use a 194 push-in type bulb like the dash light bulbs.

Originally, the fronts are wired to brown and run to the light switch

Re: marker lights: always on or blinker??

On my old GMC, they blinked with the turn signal, and came on with the parking lights. that's what i plan on doing with my chevy too.

Re: marker lights: always on or blinker??

Interesting. I would like to know how they wired them so I could add that as an option to my wiring diagrams. All the ones I have show only a park light routing.

Anyone have a picture of what the marker lamps sockets look like for the blinking and on. Do they fit into the chrome ringed markers??

Re: marker lights: always on or blinker??

The rear marker lights burn steady with the parking lights on. The front markers will come on with the parking lights as well. The fronts flash with the turn signals when the parking lights are off and they flash opposite the turn signals when the parking lights are on. They work that way because the grounds reverse depending on if the parking lights are on or not.

Re: marker lights: always on or blinker??

AHHH.. well that makes sense.
All 4 are on with the parking lights, and the front blink off.

The front parking lights are kind of odd like that too arn't they?? They only come on when the parking lights only are on, and turn off when your head lights are on, but blink??
Thanks mvfd.

Re: marker lights: always on or blinker??

Was this an option? None of my trucks flash the front marker lights. Of those that I have had that had the markers wired from the factory (some didn't) they were all wired like this:

Re: marker lights: always on or blinker??

Super easy to wire. Leave the wire that turns on the markers (usually brown) Then remove the ground wire and tie it in to the signal wire. (light blue and dark blue)

Right on. Great info. I guess you can do the same for the rear, just tie it into the green and yellow??

Re: marker lights: always on or blinker??

If you do that for the rear, they will turn off every time you hit the brakes.
I have found no rhyme nor reason as to why some blinked, and others did not. This is however, true, that some did, and others did not. I have had 2 from the same plant side by side, same year, neither hacked, side by side... only seperated by a few thousand on the assembly number, one blinked, one did not.

Re: marker lights: always on or blinker??

Maybe a guy on one shift thought it would be cool if they blinked, and a guy on the next shift just wanted to hurry and get done so he could get to the bar on time?

Green and Yellow turn into brake lamps thru the turn signal switch--won't work for the rear.

My 69 (Dec., 1968, production) did not come from GM with lighted markers, only reflectors (see pic below). There was no option for lighted markers. I THINK I read on here that reflectors OR lights were required starting in 1968 and that lights and reflectors were required starting Jan. 1, 1970. I can't vouch that this is correct though. I do know that the deluxe style markers were introduced during the 1969 model year and believe that they were all lighted.

Far as I know lighted side markers were an option in '69. If not they have only reflectors.

In any event, long thread on this subject here:

I'll be darned. Glad I said I "believe that they were all lighted". My 69 CST came new with the standard reflectors. I called and asked GM why my CST didn't have the deluxe markers and was told the deluxe markers came out a couple weeks after my truck was built in Dec., 68. I assumed they were all lighted. Never too old to learn. It also did not have a headliner which had become part of the CST trim.
