17 inch ralleys

Hello new to the site I just scored some 17 inch ralley wheels on CL yesterday for cheap, but they have some rusty chrome which i am having stripped and powdercoated. I was wondering what size tires to go with, they are 8 inches wide. I was thinking either 255 or 275 60 17. Here is my truck, 71 cst 10

Re: 17 inch ralleys

I know that the wheels pictured arent ralleys, I am new to the site and just thought I would show a picture of my truck as it is now. The ralley's I bought are at the chrome shop being stripped so they can be powdercoated. They are 17x8 inch from stockton wheel. I was hoping someone on here had some and could recommend a tire sizee that fits our bodystyle of trucks well.

Re: 17 inch ralleys

What size wheel and tire do you have now? Are you wanting something with the same overall height?

Re: 17 inch ralleys

Oh come on guys, do the math..... the pics are dated 11-04-08, and he said he scored the wheels yesterday, which would have been 11-10-08. No time-space continuum way-back machine needed to figure that one out!

I can't help you on a tire size, but I do like your truck. I dig that green/green combo!

They're being stripped of chrome and powdercoated

Are they the truck style or the corvette style?

Re: 17 inch ralleys

I have 17" vette style rallye going on my truck in the next couple weeks. Here's some of the research I came up with for tires, for what it's worth:

275/60/17 is about 30" tall, and will not fit a 5" drop very well (you'd have to tuck it, and you'd need like a 5" backspace on 8" wide wheel to do that). With a 4" drop, you'd probably get a little rubbing on a 4" backspace wheel over big bumps.

This is all considering a 71 and up rear end (wider than 70 or earlier).

275/55/17 is a hair under 29", and if using a 4" backspace wheel, will sit under the well on a 5" drop nicely.

If you're sticking with stock height, you'll probably like the height/width of the 275/60/17, but there'll be some issues in the front.

A 255/60/17 (if you can find one) would fit without steering rub at stock height, but I'm thinking 275/60/17 is gonna get you some rubbing and possibly damage if you're steering and going over a bump.

Re: 17 inch ralleys

The wheels are the 17 inch vette style with the early 67 camaro style center cap. I paid 150 for the wheels and caps with worn tires on them. I went to the tire shop today and you are right the 255 60 17 is hard to find in anything but an SUV tire but they did have some goodyear gtII in that style which is an okay tire I have had before, but was hoping for something better. I have cooper cobras on my 69 camaro but no luck with Cooper in that size. Thanks for the good info on the tire fitment Jones, I will find something in a 255 60. The color is gonna be a silver with some metallic in it, looked very close to the argent silver the early color wheels where.

Re: 17 inch ralleys

i had a set of 17x8 TTIIs on my 72 GMC. I was running 275/50/17s and they looked nice.

I think only Falken and Nitto make tires in that size (or at least a few years ago when I bought them)

Good luck

Re: 17 inch ralleys

Wheel Vintiques is spectacular, BTW (IMHO). They have great products, excellent service - I had questions on the phone, they answered them fully and helpfully. Also, I ordered through summit (no sales tax or shipping!), and Summit said 10-15 business days. I got them 2 days later directly from Wheel Vintiques! Perfect chrome, perfect trim pieces.
