Question What is this for??

I guess I am missing something in my boooks, but in the picture is a do-hickey behind my carb (circle in yellow) on the accelerator linkagebracket . there is an electrical connection on the back side and a plunger on the front side. It doesn't appear to have been hook up anytime recently.

Sorta reminds me of an early smog device so your throttle wouldn't shut down too fast, But I don't see how it would work any of the linkage at all.

So any one know what it is, and can I officially send it to the permanent recycle bin, or should I figure out what the old farmer did to make it non-functional??

I'm not sure it that is one, but some trucks years ago would have a governor (that's what my dad always called them anyway) installed that would limit the engine from being revved too high. By the way, I like that new avatar.

ok Im not sure what that is but. I once had a 67 GM car and it had some sort of electronic kickdown on it. if that carb is out of a 67 thru 72 I wouldnt think it had any smog devices what so ever on it. because of the fact that car companies didnt really have as strict of guidelines back then. but I could be wrong since Im not finding it in my books either. my guess would be basically if it runs fine without it and its not hurting anything leave it alone. lol. if nothing else take it off and forget it. after all the smog stuff only takes away power in the long run and we all know more power is better. anyway my suggestion would be look under anything to do with the carb. meaning smog devices, choke devices, as well as tranny kickdown. if the motors working fine I wouldnt worry about it

my 72 i-6 has a similer looking thing that when you turn the key to on it energizes and moves the linkage off the cutout position. my gues is to help with starting

That device is to stop the vehicle from dieseling otherwise known as run un after the truck is shut down or off

It was called an anti-diesel solenoid. This was part of the smog system. This was to get the engine to pass federal emmision--it had to idle at a higher speed to pass. If cut off at this speed it would "diesel". With the key off it would retract to close the throttle more so it would not diesel. Just set the idle to your likes and forget the solenoid.

Thanks guys...There must have been more to the carb linkage than what i have now to make it work. jhow66....thats what I was trying to remember...the anti-dieseling solenoid. Dang it get rough when you get older....
