Happy but Sad Day

I couldn't take it anymore. I have been working on my truck for about 3 years now and I'm putting on the final items. I have to get out of the shop and see what it looks like outside. I fired it up and pulled it out. First I stopped to admire it for a while and take some pictures. Then the temptation to drive it a little more got to me so I took it around the in the field. When I came to the driveway I tried to give it some gas and move it into 3rd. This is where I became SAD. The carb flooded out from what I can tell. The truck ran when I started working on it. The PO said that the carb needed to be adjusted. I cleaned a crap load of rust out of it and replaced the everything from the tank to the carb. (Edelbrock). I have been reading that I may need a fuel regulator. Is there a good way to check your fuel pressure?

local parts store might loan you a pressure gauge if you don't have one.

looking nice. A vac/fuel pressure guage can be had for probably less than $20 bucks.

If you're running an engine mounted mechanical fuel pump like original, you don't really need a regulator.

It sounds like some trash may have gotten into the needle and seat and stuck the float open.

The truck idles fine and worked fine in first. I didn't have to give it any gas though. I have pulled it apart before and cleaned it really good. Is there a spot I should pay greater attention to when cleaning it this time? I am new to engine work. I'm just starting out, this has been my first project. Thanks

check the condition of the needle ive seen them crack and split almost righ off

Nice truck. Can you give details on that fuel door in the back of the LHS? Are you using a Blazer tank? What did you cut the fuel door off of?

I agree with Tx Firefighter in regards to the need for a regulator. Just a few questions to lead us in the right direction;

1) What size is the carb you are using?

2) What fuel pump are you using?

3) Are you sure that it flooded out the engine? Were the spark plugs soaked?

4) When you applied the throttle, did it pop, or just stall out? Did it start back up after and idle again?

The reason I am asking these questions is to establish if the carb/fuel system is the problem at all. It could be something as simple as a timing issue. When you start laying into the throttle, the distributor advances, and if the timing is incorrect, it may choke. This is usually accompanied by a pop though. Let us know....

is the fuel in your tank 3 years old too?
maybe bogged, not because flooded, but because starved?

I'll try to answer a few questions.
The fuel tank in it is a truck/blazer replacement tank from LMC. I used a fuel door and filler neck from a 1994 chevy 1/2 ton.
1.The carb is 1406 Edelbrock
2. fuel pump is mechanical type on the block
3. as far as flooding - the truck bogged down and died. I didn't check the plugs to see if they were wet. I tried to start it after a hour and it still wouldn't start.
4. The truck didn't pop at all it just bogged and died.
I will have time to look at it somemore tomorrow night.

Sweet truck man! My sons truck is exact same except 1/2 ton. 4 lift and all, but it will be GM superior blue deep sapfire when finished, no more black.
Of course its not in that condition.....yet.

What kind of cap do you have on the gas tank?

I have a notion that the tank isn't vented and while it will idle for a while and put around the field when you attempt to speed up it creates a vacuum in the tank and acts like it is running out of gas.
A few years ago I bought three "quote" vented caps from a local parts house that were a top name brand and none of them vented. I even walked a mile and a half to a gas station the first time and carried a gallon of gas back thinking I was out of gas. The car would drive about two miles and then act starved for gas. After it sat for a while it you could start it up and drive off but in another couple of miles it would act up again.
If it does the same thing again open the gas cap and see if it sucks air in or you can hear the sides of the trank pop back out from being sucked in by the fuel pump.
Other than that, I'm with the other guys in that dirt/crud got in the carb. I always put an inline filter before the fuel pump on every older rig I own. The filter will plug up if there is dirt in the tank but it saves fuel pumps and carbs.

I ran into the problem with the fuel cap already. I have the cap from the 1994 Chevy that I took the door off of. I have it on there but it is not tightened. I still would like to find a better way to deal with the vacuum cap.
There was a strong gas smell also when is bogged out.

I have a stupid question. Have you installed an inline fuel filter? If not, you need to install one or you will always be getting crap in your needle and seat. Not trying to insult your intelligence, just throwing out ideas.
