lug nut question

OK, pretty sure I am going to be putting some mid 90's plain steel wheels on my 77. Until the spider caps I want come out (or until I can afford them), I will be running the chrome center caps on these wheels. These center caps are held in place with screw on caps that go over the lug nuts. My problem is, the lug nuts that these typically go on are metric, and my truck is 1/2 20 obviously. Does anyone make a 1/2 20 lug that has external threads for these center caps to screw onto?

i had this problem putting s-10 wheels on an omega i just had to change the wheel studs.

Jeff, they make "conversion" lug nuts. Let me see if I can find them.

there is a thread here about just that issue but I can't find it. I have the same issue with my 84 8 lug and have the nuts ordered to install factory slots on mine. The thread had a link to e-bay where I found them. jim

What do you think. Satin black wheels, chrome centers...and black or chrome lug covers? I am leaning towards balck lug covers.

Jeff, Sorry I got sidetracked. At a glance that appears to be what you need. Please verify with the seller(s).

What do you mean when you say chrome centers? Are you saying bullet cones? I think I would go with chrome bullet cones, and chrome lug covers. I would consider semi gloss (not flat or satin) because it's less prone to absorb grease and brake dust.

After you get it together look at adding small trim rings. I think it would help on your light colored truck and compliment the chrome bumpers.

BTW- I'm sure you can guess why I am so keen on this idea...

The seller states "used to install newer center caps on older models" so I think those lug nuts will work. Double check on the lug caps.

Ken, not sure the cones alone will work on these wheels. The center of the wheels are not a perfect circle, whereas the cones are. I ideally want to get a set of genuine spider caps, so when they are available, I'm there.

The chrome centers I am using look similar to our stock metal rally centers, only a little more flat and are made of plastic. I am up in the air on black or chrom lug covers...what do you think?

I'll take your advice on the black, and will also use rings too.

Bigblock, the thread is called 8 lug wheels. It's back on page 3 I think. There are several pics of trucks with factory late model wheels. I ordered the lugs, but there is a difference in them. Regular factory lugs are 7\8" these are 13\16s but the thread pitch is still 9\16. After spending $50 I hope they work. I'll let you know when they get here. Still have to figure out how I'm going to work the manual hubs with solid hub caps. I'm thinking a small hole with a "skate" key fitting inside. I'll figure something out. jim

I can't find any 13/16 hex lug caps...they are all 3/4 or 7/8. The lugs I just purchased are the 13/16. Does anyone know if they MAKE 13/16 lug covers?

Bigblock. I'm hopeing that the ones I bought will fit the lugnut covers I have now. In the other thread the fellow that bought the same ones I did made no mention of there being a problem there so I am assuming they will fit. I'll have mine today or tommorow so I'll let ya know. jim

OK!!! They are the correct thread and the lug nut covers screw right on. The nut size is 13\16". I think they do that on purpose in the hopes that teh nuts don't get confused with metric ones. The nuts are stamped 9\16ths to further detur any fowl ups. They also sent me an extra nut or they miscounted. I can see now it's going to take a little work to fit the front hubcaps over the 4WD hub though. I'll post how I did that when it gets warm again. jim

Yes, those are the ones. I have had a set of these laying around for years...figured I'd use them until I can upgrade ot the Spider caps.

I think the black lug caps would look good with the black wheels. I am worried if I ran chrome caps and rings I would have to much "shiny stuff" on the wheels.

when you get the spider caps let us know i would love to get a set for mine but cant find any that fit, also today i saw a set of ralley's with the small trim ring and the center caps off a newer astro van and they look super nice. so needless to say i've been callin all around today tryin to find a set of those caps.

thanks bb73 thats the same problem i've been runnin into they are all 5x4 3/4 but there is a member here that has those caps on his truck i'll see if i can locate him.

it's EN*PN78 his are bullet centers and the actual lug nuts are shaped like bullets.
