427 Question

Anyone got a 427? Whats your average mileage? Please also tell me how much horse power you have (if you know) As of right now I'm debating what would be better a 383 or a 427. I'm trying to keep it at decent mileage which for my truck 11 or more is an improvement from the 305.

my dad has one in his 52' deluxe

its okay, but not much performance, i think its the rear gears.

he drives it maybe once every 2 months or so

build a 383. i am a big block man at heart but the cost of a real 427 will floor you these days . you could build one from a 454 block but you can forget gas mileage with any big block. DAVE

ya if you want to sacrifice any kind of gas mileage i say go with the 383. you could get plenty of power out of it too. tom will tell you all about it.

After I posted this I started thinking that I'd have to change alot of stuff on the truck to use a big block. So the 383 is the best option right now.

Ryan, i see Tom hasnt been here yet... so i'll chime in a lil bit... a 383 is a good all around street engine. can be tame enough for every day driving, and can get a lil crazy for a more performance oriented application. my personal combo will include a compression ratio around 10:1, a Comp Cams XR 276, and a set of Vortec heads. i shouldnt have any problems running this setup on 92 octane, even with its 8.2:1 DCR.

You just picked two of my favorite engines. The 383 cause A: I have one and B: are very easy to make! The 427 cause A: biggest bore/shrotest stroke combo big block avalible and B: Nothing like a big block under the hood!

If your on any kind of a budget, go with the 383. They can make impressive power fairly cheaply. 400hp isent even hard anymore. If you want absolute gobs of power, go for the 427. If you want to really strain your bank account, and make almost as much power as the BB427, then make a 427SB. Just remember heads to support 427BB are out there, and stock. Heads to support 427SB are also out there, and $1400+ a set minimum.

Now I want you to goto www.theengineshop.com and look at the Hardcore 427 small block and picture this in your truck. You will see it dropping in easy because you won't have to replace all the brackets and pulleys. You can visualize your current headers bolting right up. Now that you are comfortable with the 500+HP you can put in your truck, I want you to pick up the phone and charge this engine on your credit card.

The 305 only getting 11 MPG? If so something is really not working wrong. For that amount I'll take the 427!!

427 punched to 440 in my pickup, TH400, 3:08 rear on a 275-60-15 = 12+ on the highway.
My Suburban with a 383, 700R4, 3:73 rear on 275-60-15 = 16 to 17 highway.
The 427 is FAR superior to the 383 . But for a daily driver, I like my 383. Ken
