Fleetside Step up Inserts
Hi Guy,
Just joined, I normally hang out at Stovebolt or Jolly's 60-66 GMC group. I have a question for the smart guys. I came across a pair of fleetside "step up" incerts that are installed in the sides of the bed to let you get a leg up to get in the bed easier from the sides. I probally won't install them in my '60 as they were not offered as an option and woud be incorrect if I added them. Anybody know if these are rare? I've only seem them on ebay once before. Thanks Jake |

Common aftermarket-parts & install in the day, I believe, for all the guys who wished they'd bought "the real thing."

Re: Fleetside Step up Incerts
The guy who owned this truck used to work at a General Motors production plant. He said that the step-up in a short fleetside was really rare. like only 1100 made. He said his was one of them. Another rare truck.

Re: Fleetside Step up Incerts
I like the look now that I've seen where they go, but I would think that you would want to add another fender brace under the trucks lower fender to keep from deforming the lower part of the fender? Would that make sense?
Also were they ever offered as an add on for the 60-66 line? Jake

I'm definitely NOT an expert on the "rare factory stuff," but I've seen a LOT of these steps installed in fleetsides over the years. My money would go on "dealer-installed," or "auto parts store aftermarket." They were cast aluminum,I believe, & yes, the bedsides would deform. I've seen that "option," too. |

Re: Fleetside Step up Incerts
Hey,welcome to the website. It sounds like you keep quality company.(So,what are you doing here?lol)
Those steps were never installed by the factory. That 1,100 shortbed story is a crock. They were in the dealer accessory program as well as available elsewhere.I bought one from Dick Cepek in the`70s.They were offered in the 60-66 dealer accessory program, too.Maybe not every year, but once they came out they were.

Re: Fleetside Step up Inserts
Tim, you are absolutly correct. They became an over the counter accesory sometime in the early part of the 60 - 66 year generation. I want to say they had a list price of like 7 bucks for the two, and a template to tell you where to cut your bed sides where they would not distort much.
Never a factory option though... only dealer installed or over the counter. |

I had never seen one before but as soon as he said rare option, I'm thinking, ya right. Or like ESPN, C'mon man. My wife was standing right next to me when he said it and I had to confirm it with her, just in case. She just told me that was exactly what he said. This rare option just lost its flare thanks to Longhorn Man and special-K.

Re: Fleetside Step up Inserts
Yes these were a aftermarket item that came out im the mid 1960s a few years after the fleetside became popular and was as I understand the answer to the main opostion to the relativly new design, access. They werent popular and sat for years unsold in dealers parts rooms. I'd like a pair if anybody has a nice set.

Re: Fleetside Step up Incerts
My "crock" comment was towards the guy that told you.Nice little story.
I was just making sure there was no doubt for anyone reading. Joe Blow:"I have a`68 396 CST shortbed with a/c,speedminder,tach,posi,buckets,wood floor..." John Doe:That`s cool.Mine`s super rare. It`s only got two options, but one is the super rare side step. One of 1,100.So there!!!!

Actually they were a GM part. But dealer installed.
I had 2 NOS ones about 10 15 years ago. Sold'em at a swapmeet.

Re: Fleetside Step up Inserts
Well so they were but the factory did not install them, you had the dealer put them on if you wonted them as a dealer accessory...aftermarket was incorrect.
