cleaning or painting wheels

I bought used rally wheels and was wondering if anyone has painted them using Eastwood's Rally Paint? My wheels have cleaned up good but have scratches and I need to paint over them. What All should I look into to get them back in shape?

Re: cleaning or painting wheels

I've sandblasted a set and used Dupli-color paint. It's a very close match and probably way cheaper. I forget the actual name but should be available at a good auto parts store.

Re: cleaning or painting wheels

I painted mine the other day using an industrial gloss black spray paint from Home Depot. I think it is made by dupli-color, I could be wrong. It comes in a tall spray can, grey in color. It's supposed to be for construction equipment etc, so it should last awhile (maybe it was rustoleum, don't remember). Here's a pic after the paint and trim rings, I just scuffed them down and painted

Nope, that would have been too easy to remember. I looked it up and it's Dupli Color WP 101 Silver and it's specifically a wheel finish. It's almost an exact match to the original Argent Silver. I learned this from LivRat.

Re: cleaning or painting wheels

why buy from eastwood when the same paint is available at your local autoparts store with no shipping costs?

Re: cleaning or painting wheels

I cleaned mine up real good, then primed them, then went out and got some of that duplicolor high performance wheel coating for just a couple bucks a can but you only need two, I believe they turned out great.

before

after

with centercaps

Re: cleaning or painting wheels

The company I work for uses a basecoat/clearcoat application. There are certain paint codes for different colors such as infiniti, jaguar etc. The cheapest way is the good ol rattle can job that says "wheel paint" on the front, and they will look ok-If you want a perfect finish, just paint them like you would anything else bc/cc.

Re: cleaning or painting wheels

I was wondering what is good to clean the center caps from road grime that has been left on a long time. Mine are really dirty and I need something to clean them up without scuffing them before I buff the chrome. Soap and water did not help.

You might try the blue coral wheel cleaner, its green in a clear bottle with some steel wool, test first to see if it will scratch. GOOD LUCK!

Re: cleaning or painting wheels

There is a wheel cleaner called AtoZ tire and wheel cleaner they sell at autozone spray it on and dirt and grime rolls off. It took tar off the wheels on daily driver.

I bought a set of 4 center caps from the swap meet that were pretty bad. All straight though so that was good. I peeled off the center metal stickers and went to town. I used very fine steel wool, bottle of Castrol Super Clean, and a bucket of water. Then I polished them up with Blue Magic chrome polish. Turned out pretty good.

For the wheels, I bought them off Craigslist for $60. Sanded them down to bare metal. Primed them. Masked the centers and painted all of the wheel Silver with Duplicolor's Performance Wheel Coating in a spray can. Part number Dupli Color WP 101 Silver. Then I masked of the outer ring and painted the centers with some paint I had my buddy at Napa mix up for me. Little darker than the paint of the truck, but pretty close.

Hope that helps anyone out there.

Thumbs up Re: cleaning or painting wheels

Here they are four weeks later. I sandblasted each wheel, washed and painted them. I used Eastwood’s “Encapsulator” on the rims of each wheel and then painted the sides and back with chassis black from Eastwood, and the fronts with Eastwood Detail Silver. Washed the caps and used blue magic and it really cleaned them up very nice I used blue magic on the rings also. I will get new tires in a few weeks.

They look good but you could've gotten the same result using a rattle can...guess you were stuck on eastwood...
