another headers question
Ok i have asked this question before but i dont have the best memory so if someone can help me here i would really be thankful.
I have a 72 SWB with a 355sbc/TH350 but it has old headers on it that i cant make out the brand on and they need to be replaced due to holes in the collector. So my question is what headers are you guys running? I want to buy Hooker Comps PN# 2452HKR. Well when i called summit they tell me they wont fit auto tranny vehicles but dont know why. I am assuming its because of the tranny dipstick placement but not completely sure. Anyone else have any ideas for me? I wont buy headman and i wanted the hooker headers because they are nicely priced at 159.00. I'd like not to spend more then 200.00 if possible. Please for the love of god put this question to bed for me ..lol Thank you so much in advance! P.S. For those of you that remember me i guess this is my official "I'm Back!" post ..lol. Just got home from Iraq. -Hart

Re: another headers question
Im running long tube Hooker Comp's (2.5" collectors) as well w/ a TH350...they are old as dirt and still holding up well. Im not sure if I would go w/ the same set if they needed to be replaced, they tend to burn up / cook the #5 plug wire w/ the way the #1 tube rides the #5 tube down to the collectors. You can use straight spark plug boots on the 1,3,4 & 8 cyl but require 90 degree boots on the 5,6 & 7. If you go with 90 degree boots all the way around with some heat shield / wire sleeves you won’t have any issues w/ burning up wires. The only other con I can offer up is that they are pretty damn tough to tighten up when the header bolts begin to back out, I do my best to get a 7/16 wrench in there but it’s tight…I don’t know if this is an issue w/ other headers or not, my experience w/ them are limited.
On another note, welcome home and thank you for your service!

Re: another headers question
I appreciate all the help guys. I just got off the phone with the techs over at Hooker/Holley. They keep telling me that the headers i want wont work with an auto tranny. The guy says the the driver side header tucks up too close for the auto tranny. Mind you my setup is a floor shifter not on the colum. You guys have any suggestions? Do any of you have a auto on the floor shifter setup with these?

Re: another headers question
I have the same Hookers as are shown in the pix. Don't know how old they are, but they don't leak. I have a automatic in my truck, too.
Someone had a post on here within the past two months about some headers he bought from Summit Racing. He says they are a really great set of headers and they have the same part number as some Flowtech's. They have a great price in the catalog. If I don't reuse my Hookers and don't go with a set of ram's horns, I'm gonna look at them a little bit harder.

Re: another headers question
OK....he's got Comp headers with the 2.5" collector and 1 5/8" primaries. He said the super comps have 3" collectors and 1 3/4" primaries and that's where they may differ in shape.
If you have the motor to support the bigger headers you can have them cut to fit, otherwise I'd sell 'em and get the comps. He didn't know the part number but you can get it on Jeg's or Summit easy.

Re: another headers question
Well the Hooker Comps PN 2452HKR have the 3'' inch collector. I really dont have the need for it other then i love the way it sounds. The motor is nothing special. I just need a set that fit. I have flowmaster 44 series muffles to compliment them Do you guys think the 2.5" collectors will sound just as good?
I have to admit i am a little impatient and just want to get her done so i can enjoy the truck for a few months till i save up the money to buy the rest of my parts for the LS1 swap. I may just order them and see if they fit. Just dont want to deal with the shipping them back BS if they dont. I know this may sound stupid but the exhaust ports on a 350 are oval correct? -HART

Re: another headers question
if you are just gonna do a LS swap later why not just buy some cheap summit brand painted headers? they are super cheap and just as effective for your application
i believe the summit "brand" headers are actually flowtechs just relabled here... http://store.summitracing.com/egnsea...115+4294840140

Re: another headers question
The PN on my invoice from Jegs says 05202452, which sounds like the same one you have, cuz the last numbers are the same. Go for it, they will fit fine. But if you are going to do an LS swap, could you find some used headers or even cheaper summit brand ones, just to last til you get the new motor set up.

Re: another headers question
The only difference will be in low end torque. The smaller primaries and collectors will give the truck more acceleration from idle than the bigger ones. Unless you are running 400+hp, stick with the smaller of both.
I have 1.5" primaries and 2.5" collectors on mine and it jumps when the gas goes down. I am running around 300hp. Soundwise you will not notice any difference at all.

Re: another headers question
Sounds good! Did you go w/ the 2.5" or 3" collectors? I agree w/ Kelly, the 2.5" will probably be the best for your setup.
