Painting help needed please

First of all let me start by saying "I am a Moron"
I need help understanding what went wrong. I painted my fenders and doors yesterday and when I went back to the shop to look at them I noticed Lines in the blue where it was not covered enough. (darn Lighting) I scuffer the clear and proceeded to the blue over it. It bubbled the paint like someone just threw on paint stripper.
Problem 2: When I realized it was a total loss I peeled the tape off and the clear peeled off in sheets with the clear. Where did I go wrong?

Your color lifted the clear coat. Solvents were trapped and they had to get out. This can even happen with spray paint in a can. That is why alot of cans will say you can recoat within 1 hour or wait 48 hours to recoat. After 48 hours most of the solvents have left.

Re: Painting help needed please

It sounds like the clear was not cured fully so the reducer in the blue paint attacked it. You may want to call your paint supplier.

I found out this past summer that the drying time given on the primer I was using was based on 100 degrees F and I was painting at 70 degrees F. Instead of 4 hours @ 100, (which I did not know about), I needed 32 hours @ 70).

Murphy and his laws move right in when you are painting as there seems to be thousands of things to go wrong!

Re: Painting help needed please

The above post are correct. Sometimes when you have to repaint over fresh paint ,if you put it on too wet it will wrinkle like what you described. Wait for a couple of more days re-sand and try again. The reason you can see through the blue is probably because you didn't put enough coats of base on to cover it thoroughly. Don't get too frustrated painting can go south on you real quick sometimes for reasons that are totally out of your control. The last time I added it up I've painted somewhere in the neighborhood of 7000 cars, and every once in a while I get one that wrinkles up on me too. GOOD LUCK.

Re: Painting help needed please

yeah you didnt wait long enough.
tips..
CLEAN CLEAN CLEAN.. when your done take your gun apart clean everything that paint touches and then clean it again.

keep your gun pointed at the panel your painting, dont "fade" it out on the edges. spray all the way past it, helps get an even coat.

Practice!. paint some ****. dont just start on your pride and joy. get some old bike paarts, a mail box, a rock, the cat. what ever. youve already learnd you gota let your primer paint and clear cure long enough before doing anything with it. youll learn alot playn with spray'n good luck.

And never fry bacon when you are nude.
But that has nothing to do with painting.

I am going to use this one a lot.
Can you re-paint over clear?
If so, do you have to re-primer first?

Re: Painting help needed please

Yes you can repaint over clear. You do not need to re prime. Main thing at this time is what 69chevyshort said. wait a couple more days then sand and redo. 69chevyshort is a def pro and should follow his advise for sure.

A couple things I would do is sand now with 400 wet and wait a couple days then spray. Reason is, it will give solvents a better chance to evap prior to re spray.

A trick to spraying metalics is to "set the metalics" I spray a coat going back and forth, go to the next panel and do the same. Then go back to the first panel and do a diagnal light coat or drop coat using mostly your wrist not doing a complete coat, just a dusting. This will set the metalics and give you a better chance at not having tiger stripes.

Hope this makes sense, easier to do then wright.

BTW what materials are you using?

Re: Painting help needed please

You need to monitor you temperatures. Not just the room. Check panel temp, room temp, and material temp. I am an auto refinish supplier and a cold fender will do some odd things.

Re: Painting help needed please

The same thing happened when I painted my uncles truck, it was late and dew set on the paint, it trapped the solvents and we had a half flat, half gloss truck.

Re: Painting help needed please

Holding the spray gun to close to the surface will cause striping also.
