Built up a Hyper-V box. x3220 proc, 8GB ram, 3x1tb in a RAID5. Also migrated the home NAS from 4x500GB to 4x1.5TB

1.5TB->4.5TB overall.

That... and the amount of RAM! With that setup you should be good to go for whatever you're doing for 3 or 4 more years.

This summer suspension work took the shape of new exterior paint on the house. (at least you can see the difference)

...ain't life grand? I took a couple weeks off of work here @ the end of the year to swap out the SM420 for a 700r4, convert the leaf-spring rear of the GMC to coils and relocate the fuel tank. As luck would have it I spent my "truck" money on a new 4L60E transmission for the wifes 'burban a couple weeks ago. Frick! Frick! Frick!

Career is always more important than the hobby. I was unemployed from June till November and the Company I went to work for is already making cuts and I'm not even through my 3 month probation. God help me, I already went through my families savings to survive the last run of no work. Good luck to everyone struggling like me out there.

....career....two week vacation, right now; 10-week vacation every summer. All unpaid. Oh, another week off at spring break w/o pay. The price I pay for driving a school bus and getting 6 hour lunch breaks, every day.

Get it all while you can. Anyone who says there is no age discrimination in hiring is younger than I am. When you list your employment history, they can read it and I can weep.

Nice-sounding computer, but most of what you described went over the top of my thinning hair. I get some of it, but not enough to understand the tech side.

The washer/dryer, on the other hand, I get. Loss of paint job and engine replacement....I get.

Life sucks....then, you die.

I no longer have DVD's, CD's, or photo albums. It's all been digitized and originals sold or traded. So the 1.5TB was that storage, now it will be 4.5tb - enough for 3-4 years, I hope at least.

The Servers (2) are running Microsoft Hyper-V with 8 guest machines on one (quad core, 8GB ram, 3x1TB) and the other is VMware ESXi 3.5 (AMD FX-55, 4GB RAM, 2x250GB) which is not in use yet (waiting on a compatible NIC card)

My desktop and my g/f's desktops are both Intel Q6600 quad cores with 8gb of ram running Vista 64 bit. I have 3x74GB 10k drives in a RAID5, she has 5x250GB in a RAID1 and a 3 disk RAID5. I have a better video card for gaming than she does though. Mine has dual 20" flat screens and hers is a single 25" wide screen.

So yea, basically a fire in my house = grab the NAS and run out. All is backed up to it, and all can be recovered from it. All the parts and ****, I have insurance to replace/improve it.

I hope! We both work in IT and are Microsoft certified people. We work at the same place and most customers are credit unions and banks, so for us, its nice to be able to do an install or walk through an issue in a lab environment instead of on a customer network.

I'm a network engineer during the day, father of 4 (and a PITA dog, too) at night. I used to care about my home tech gear, but since my kids take over EVERYTHING that has ever been mine, I stopped caring. Not like I have time to play, anyway. My kids just got a Wii from their grandparents (I fought it, I think kids should play outside), and all I got to do is set it up so I don't have wires and controllers all over my living room. They won't let me play!

Heh, Yea, I am sure kids will change things a lot. We are still on the fence on if it is in the plans or not... we already both have a lot of demands on our time, and a lot of sacrifices would need to be made. Im not sure if I am selfless enough.

Here is my frame work, suspension, and engine rebuild. The wife has wanted one since she was a kid. This isn't the exact horse we're getting but it's a close copy. Guess I can't complain too much though. Now she'll have her hobby and I'll have mine. I keep trying to tell her though that MY hobby doesn't have to be fed every day

So mvfd50, do think it'd be a problem if I had two hobbies (horses and trucks), and my wife still hadn't figured hers out? I've wanted horses since I was a kid, too, growing up on my grandpa's ranch. He used to break them like he was born to do it and to this day is still my hero.

I've got no problem with people having hobbies. I kinda like horses too and will probably get one for me someday. And up until just a couple of days ago, my wife didn't have a hobby. Now I gotta build a fence and a stall in the barn. Tough to do when it's freezing raining. But oh well...
