Trucks that do more then a Straight Line...
So are we as truck people outcast from the Open Road racing(ie. Silver State Classic ect.) and other alike forms of racing where you have to make left and....Right hand turns? is it just pointless to push a brick through the air or are people frightened by the weight added from all that extra sexy sheetmetal
where are the Fast trucks that turn is what im asking? or am i crazy for even thinking a truck could perform such a feat...

Re: Trucks that do more then a Straight Line...
What would a SEVERELY lightened say 55-57 or 67-72 pickup weigh compared a Chevelle or something of the full frame variety? And would the Aerodynamics of the truck hurt it badly enough to make it just pointless even with some body mods if need be? i remember them saying at 220mph Big Red(Awesome Car) was pushing so much air through the grill it was starting to hurt it speed wise and if they had chucked the body for a later 90's F-Body it would have picked up 30 or so mph
What times are the duramax running? is that willow springs?

Re: Trucks that do more then a Straight Line...
Trucks are not a great platform for pro-touring,only because it takes so much more modding to get them to a competitive level w/the usual built camaro and mustang road cars. The Banks truck is only a truck in outter shape,,and just barely. B/A though...

Re: Trucks that do more then a Straight Line...
thats the point....growing up a 69' Yenko or Z28 camaro was my favorite car hands down, then as i grew into the Gearhead i am today i noticed everyone goes for them or a mustang and you can pretty much say you've seen those cars in every racing class with every motor and tranny combo imaginable! i like to head to the other side of the hobby with things you dont see everyday(one of them being a truck trying for 200mph at Bonneville and The Silver State Classic)
Plus whats the fun in just modding something "alittle" and having it do just "ok"?

Edit: Didn't everyone scoff at big red when it was built originally, and it crushed the competition once they build the frame and did that all up. Last edited by leftcoast66; 12-28-2008 at 09:40 PM. |

Re: Trucks that do more then a Straight Line...
Yes everyone laughed at it saying "theres no way your gonna throw that ton an a half brick through the air at 200mph no matter how Red it is" and look what it did! blew 220mph and Ate the competition for like two years....
Thats exactly what im thinking with the truck,i mean i no its not going 220 but i dont expect it to.i just would love to see the look on some Subaru drivers face when a Big Red(hahaha no probably Black) truck almost sticks right with him in the bends and then lays into the muscle on the straights and shows him some Tailgate

Re: Trucks that do more then a Straight Line...
I love road racing trucks. I am not building my truck for Drag (may do a little) but what i want to do is toast the Rice guys in the straight and the bends. Once done i would love to hit up a track. I will be modifying my sway bars maby make them 2in and going to play with a few drops to see what works best for it. Im not planning on 200+(maby with a big shot of juice) just to tear thru the corners.

Re: Trucks that do more then a Straight Line...
im thinking something along the lines of a Camaro Front Subframe,Truckarms,
throw out everything that doesnt make it go faster, lexan and just enough safety junk to pass tech.Of course usually A HUGE Big Block would be the choice but i was thinking of something like a turbo 6.0L vortec backed by a jerico 4 speed or a tko-600,i guess you could just build the frame from scratch because i dont think using the stock one even with a million lightning holes is gonna weigh as little as a tube one....just throwing some ideas out there

Re: Trucks that do more then a Straight Line...
Check the width of a 4th gen F-bodies K-member. You can usualy find one for free from someone that went tubular. If it could be made to work, pick up a tubular one. Front end has already been engineered and a ton of parts for it.
Rear suspension, slap a 3-link in it.

Re: Trucks that do more then a Straight Line...
Would definitely work great that way. I believe it was a 3 link in the camaro... Just don't try and overpower it all, build the suspension and get that dialed in then add more power, otherwise it'll be a pain to try and dial in as it will just want to break loose under power in the corners.

Re: Trucks that do more then a Straight Line...
Yes the camaro has a 3-link in it.
The front end would support any LS1/2/3, LQ4/9, or L92.. The LS3 or L92 with a T56 would make a fun motor in a corner carving truck.

Re: Trucks that do more then a Straight Line...
That is your opininon. It takes more skill then most are capable of. Lots of people think left turns are lame a long with straight lines.

i Think a Truck In Formula D would be So damn *****in!!! hell look how everyone freaked when the Falken 69' Camaro came flying sideways onto the scene 468ci Big Block,4 Speed,Truckarms and All...now think of that in an ol chevy pickup they would need to hand everyone a wet nap during intermission
that or anything where there is more then 1 turn in both directions is all im sayin

Re: Trucks that do more then a Straight Line...
and drag racing is a contest burning lots of tires going in a straight line just do do it again and go nowhere. Nascar is a contest that uses a ton of tires and turns left and you end up going no where but 500 miles to end up where you started. What is your point? I like anything that involves High HP cars/trucks. You just don't like it because you have never experienced it. Never take anyone's word unless they have done it/experienced it.
BTW inverter, Nice build you have there.

Re: Trucks that do more then a Straight Line...
ive been toying with the idea of throwin an old 74 swb onto a craftsman truck chassis.. just think of that well engineered chassis with a old school body rippin it up.. the fact that my friend owns a craftsman truck team and will almost give me an out dated roller is a plus...those chassis can handle lots o power and will go left or run road corse very easy..if you did it correctly you could keep it street legal as well... the more budget minded approach would be to use a metric front clip from a g body, fab the rear rails from 2x3 and use a trailing arm rear suspension..you can get alot of trick suspension pieces for that front end from various race car suppliers like day motorsports in texas..and the parts are cheap too! so bust out the wire feed and lets beat some imp*rts...picture a squarebody bustin around an evo in a corner at button willow raceway and showin them the tailgate down the next straight away....

Re: Trucks that do more then a Straight Line...
Exactly! i was just thinking more along the lines of a 55-57 body(So Purrty)
the body shape cant hurt it at low speeds like 170 and below.Ok so i laughed at that one to So could you get one of those chassis....For Sale?
