8 Bolt rim question

Ive got a nice set of 16" rims off of my 68 C20(need paint). The truck wasn't orderd with 16"s. My question is about the ring... is it a type of beed lock? Do they have any advantages over the standard 16"s? I was told that they can be dangerous when changing tires. True? And how do they come off? Thanks

Re: 8 Bolt rim question

They are a bead lock rim and the best advice I can give you is to throw them away, I always do. Most tire shops will not touch them unless you go to a big rig tire shop with a cage to mount and dismount the tires. They don't call them a widow maker for nothing. Just my opinion.

Thanks. That helps alot. I may still use them on my plow truck with winter tires, so i can run a little lower PSI. My uncle runs a big rig shop and may be able to dismount them for me. So is the ring pressed on, how do they get them off?

Don't mess with them. You can easily find a set of late model pull of 16 inch one piece wheels for a huundred dollars or so.

That's called a split rim. It's not a bead lock. Those things can kill you. There is a reason they quit making them.

they aren't even legal in some areas.
You can get junk yard 16 inch rims dirt cheap. 10 bucks a wheel sometimes, and you can get lucky and get nice tires on them already.

Re: 8 Bolt rim question

It's a lock ring wheel, not a beadlock and not quite a split rim....

But we can all agree that they can be deadly if not handled properly (that means by someone who knows what they are doing and has the right equipment). And they are heavy, and require the use of liners and inner tubes. There's really no good reason to use them unless you insist on a completely accurate restoration.

My truck came with them, and I still have one as a spare. I sold the others many years ago.
