69 Rosette Vin Rivits
Do I really need to buy them at $55.00 a set? They removed them when the cab was sandblasted. Has anyone else had this issue?

you may post over on the wtb forum. you may get lucky if someone has some they don't need.

Re: 69 Rosette Vin Rivits
Hardware store large head pop rivets plus a Dremel tool and you can make them yourself if you're careful.
Wear gloves though, I gouged the heck out of my hand with the Dremel....I mean you could hurt yourself. Not that I ever did this. That would be wrong.

Re: 69 Rosette Vin Rivits
Ditto:
It really depends on the state. However, just go now to the DMV/State Troopers and get a certification that they were removed at time of sandblast and put back on. Cab #'s match the frame #, and the title matches, shouldn't be a problem.

Re: 69 Rosette Vin Rivits
We have a Jean-Claude Goddam's here who think they are going to find Hoffa in a glovebox or something. I better be safe. Does anyone have a picture of the mounting points so I can be sure I put them back in the right position?

Re: 69 Rosette Vin Rivits
Funny how much states differ,in R.I. if its over 10 years old they not only don't look they don't care as long as the previous owner paid the sales tax.I registered my truck 10 years ago and not only did they not check any numbers but I registered it as a 72 cause thats what the previous owner wrote on the bill of sale but then I recently figured out it was only a 71 . You would think the computer would have spit that back .

Re: 69 Rosette Vin Rivits
I did a body swap in New Mexico. I put my 2wd body on a 4x4 frame. No big deal in NM. When I moved to Washington and went to tag it they compared the body VIN to the frame VIN. Of course, they didn't match. They immediately removed the body VIN tag and placed a Washington State tag on the vehicle and told me that I could not get a title for 3 years. This was a "cooling off" period. After 3 years I received my title. However, I still had the stupid Washington VIN tag on the cab.
I was told that they only checked this on vehicles coming into Washington from out-of-state.

Re: 69 Rosette Vin Rivits
harleyworkr,
If your vin tag was removed I would spend the $55 just for piece of mind. Here is my experience in Kansas; when I bought my truck it had an Arkansas title and at the time (1994) they were a notorious state for title washing. When I went to title it in Kansas, it was required to have an inspection because of this. A state trooper inspected it and immediately noticed that the vin tag had been taken off and re-riveted. He was ready to impound the truck on the spot but my Dad and I were able to convince him to locate the frame VIN and glove box SPID and match them up. He did this only because I think he realized we were kind of innocent about the whole thing and it was my first vehicle (14 years old). We figured later that the tag was legitimately (but stupidly) removed for some repairs. Bottom line he could have siezed the truck but we got lucky. I wouldn't want the risk again, which is why I will replace the rivets with rosettes at some point.

Re: 69 Rosette Vin Rivits
I've made my own for two restos I did. No one was the wiser and I had no problems with inspections either. They aren't that hard to make. At 55 bones a pop if you mangle one of them you will still be S.O.L. and have to purchase yet another set. That is just ludicrous in my opinion.
Good luck. |

Re: 69 Rosette Vin Rivits
Yeah.. Wyandotte is a ***** about that stuff. Heard more than a handful of stories of people buying Missouri trucks and never being able to license them in KS due to some BS like those rivets.. or the frame and the cab not having matching VINs.

Re: 69 Rosette Vin Rivits
I couldn't get a Kansas title for an old Ford I had cause the fenderwell headers blocked some of the numbers on the frame.

Re: 69 Rosette Vin Rivits
Personally, I would purchase the rivets. Yeah, its 55 bucks, but it's what the factory used and no one would ever know if was taken off except for you. It also looks original if you ever sell the truck so someone doesn't think the vin was swapped. just my .02

Re: 69 Rosette Vin Rivits
Breeh... that scares me. I'm doing a 2wd body swap onto a 4x4 frame in the state of Washington. The frame is a '72 Chevy 4x4, the cab a '71 GMC 2wd and the rest of the body a '71 Chevy 2wd. So do I slap the original '72 Chevy 4x4 VIN plate on the cab so the VIN and frame match..? And another thing, do the DMV's really care what the rivits look like? I mean could I just find something that fits and holds the plate on?
