I'm trying to locate a source for backing plates to convert my stock rear drums to the '67 to '75 station wagon,taxi, police car optional 12x2 rear drums. Has anyone done this swap and do you know of a source for the backing plates.

Sorry can't help you but would like to know the answer myself. Sounds like a good upgrade for the 71 rear end since I can't afford the disc upgrade.

dont know if it will help or not but i put the whole rear drum setup off a 76 c10 on my 71 or 72 rear end

What rear end do you have currently?
What year truck is yours? 72?
Why the switch from the 11" or 12" to the 12x2?

my truck is a 67 suburban with a 71-2 c10 rearend.
the switch was because the original brakes for the 71-2 rearend were no good, and the drums i had off the rearend from my 76 had good brake springs, drums, new shoes, and new wheel cylinders in them so i just switched everything over when i did the rear end swap

Thanks for the replies. The truck is a 72 with a 12 bolt, I use it to haul my vintage race bikes and my camp trailer to the track. The rear brakes need overhauling and I'd like to upgrade them. Drums are more effective for trailer hauling / stopping and cheaper then a disc setup. Bigger is better and it's a bolt on, if I can find the backing plates. The rest of the parts are available. If I had the Part numbers then it would be easier to locate them. In the meantime I'll just keep turning over rocks.

look at your local recking yards for parts(ie: backing plates etc.). they should all work from a 73-87c10 truck. and 73-91 blazer, jimmy, and suburban

You could also go the other route... 11 x 2.75" HD rear drums. They're not as tall, but definately wider. There are a few good threads on here w/ detailed donor lists if you search.

i have a set of rea backing plants off of a '72 k20 unsure of the size of hand i'll later on today.Actualy i have 2 sets 1 0f the '72 eaton rear and the other is off a mid '70's truck 14 bolt ff.I check the size and get back to you.

Hmmm, maybe I need to be more specific. The '67 ?-'75 taxi, police and station wagon heavy duty brakes were a 5 on 5 bolt pattern with 12" by 2" brake shoes. An easy bolt on! They require 12" backing plates and drums. All of the parts except the backing plates seem to be available from local suppliers. I'd like to do this upgrade if I can find the backing plates. I tried to get the part number for them from my local Chevy dealer, but his parts books only go back to the early 80's. It would make it easier to locate or authenticate the plates if I could find that part #. I haven't done a wrecking yard search yet but I will in the near future. If they're un-obtanium then I'll just rebuild my existing set up. Thanks for the replies so far.

Per the measurements I gave them. Ride height of truck inside spring and inside diameter of springs.
