Im looking to buy a truck about 25 miles from my home town. Does anyone know the laws about driving it back without tags, plates, etc. ?

Re: Transporting a new purchase. help
What I have done is drive it without plates but carrying the bill of sale and the title and only driving to its destination then making it legally mine asap.Have never had a problem.

I don't know about Michigan but here in AZ we can get 3 day temporary permits to drive stuff if it doesn't have a plate. Check your local DMV.

Indiana states if the title is dated you can drive for 30 days (same as dealer tag).

Re: Transporting a new purchase. help
If I understood my state farm agent correctly, at least in SC, if you have full coverage on at least one vehicle, your insurance company covers any vehicle you buy for the 1st 30 days. You also have 45 days to get it registered/plates.
Check with your insurance agent and DMV.

Re: Transporting a new purchase. help
I've dealt with this a few times. If you do get pulled over, tell the officer you JUST bought it and show him proof. Make sure the title is filled out completely and correctly, in most states it's illegal to possess a title that is not filled in completely. Make sure if you drive the truck again, the same officer does not see you, it won't be good. Also, make sure you're going directly from point of purchase to point of residence. In Missouri, the only place your legally allowed to drive without some form of registration (temp tag or license plates) is to and from the inspection station. Good luck.
