Re: previous owner funny fixes?

It weren't me. all i did to that truck was remove the engine and rebuild it and re-install. At that point i sold the truck for the same $ i had in it not including the labor. . I do remember there were many interior 'issues' with that truck. the only permanent fix on a truck i ever used wood for was a console i made. I parted one truck last year that had 2 wood cab mounts.

Re: previous owner funny fixes?

on my intake manifold i noticed while washing the enging i was shooting out white smoke...
upon furnte rinspection only ONE bolt was tight.. ther rest wre moveable with my finger..
cab floor "rust holes" covered in blue rtv...
ive since swapped that with steel epoxy and thin sheet metal. until i get the desire to gut my truck to do the floor pans..

bed was repainted and looked great at first.. slammed my tailgate and the handle area dropped off a CHUNK of bondo.. which covered finger size rust hole..
the bed has another spot i noticed a bleed through of rust.. sanded spot to find more bondo..
went mudding a few weeks later. Hunks of bondo fell off..
now i have a "speed hole" in the side of my bed..
the electrical sytem was mostly done in tinned aluminum wire (aircraft electrical wire) since replaced ALL wire..
it keeps going.. the majority of my "build" has been replaeing imrpoperly installed components etc etc.. and finidn excessive bondo..

Re: previous owner funny fixes?

I think a wooden muffler is a neat idea.... However I can't seem to cut a straight line on ANY material with ANY saw on the planet earth . Don't have any idea where i got that from in the family genes.

Re: previous owner funny fixes?

I'm poor, I can rig anything.
I'm the guy you want with you on your African safari when your Land Rover
breaks down out in the middle of nowhere.

I had a 73 Custom 20 with a 3spd/granny and the clutch linkage pivot ball on
the bellhousing broke off, so I welded rebar on the frame with a shelf bracket
and tied with a coat hanger to keep the linkage pivot in the right place.

License plates over a rusted out floor.

I had an 89 that I put shop rags under a broken motor mount to keep it from
banging.

Plumber's tape is holding down the El Camino gas tank in the back of my 77.

I had fence pipe exhaust on my 81 El Camino when I sold it.

I've used plumbers tape and coat hangers to temp hold up exhaust.

I stuffed a paper towel in a large rust hole and bondoed over it.

I rigged a 90 Crew cab with a wire from the battery to the fuel pump,
complete with house light switch, just to get it home from Beumont tx.

I never tried passing one of those beaters off as a perfect car though, so yall
can't pick on me too much.

Re: previous owner funny fixes?

Can you imagine the ingenuity down in Cuba? Those guys can't get parts to fix their rigs right so they adapt. You might find a diesel tractor engine in a '49 Chevy sedan.

I've seen pictures of the most sweet looking old rides and have to wonder what kind of fixes and things that they are hiding under their skins.

I'd love to go down there and look around some day. Might find some great tips and ideas!

Re: previous owner funny fixes?

A friend of mines cousin had a 66 nova and he was tellin me that he ordered a full new floor for it from yearone, and installed it on top of the existing with sheet metal screws and silicone and some pink panther fiberglass house insulation in between for sound deadening...

Another buddy of mine patched his f*rd products floor pan with RTV and a roll of 8" galvanized roof flashing, and some self tapping screws... He said "Man this stuff is really easy to form!"

Not too many good ones on my stepside when i got her, Lots of electrical wire nuts, and one of the most ghetto-hacked trailer light setups, luckily no harness was cut, just pullin power from all the wrong places making my actual tail lights not work...

OH YEAH! Computer speakers for high quality sound system on my truck. had little brackets that bolted to the kick panels, Only one worked though... pimpin.

I did make a beer can patch panel for an old 3" CB hole on side of a cab one time using some clear bathroom silicone, and some self tapping sheet metal screws... I did a good job making sure the Coors Original graphic was nice and centered!

Im a supporter of 24 oz bud cans for radiator overflows though!

Re: previous owner funny fixes?

90 burb i just scrapped. left side got hit a while back. My favorite ISN'T the stucco wire mesh grille or the wood trim holding it on. IT IS the upside down tupperware bowl as the running light. The yellow trailer light was the turn signal.

After reading your list of "fixes" I was thinking "don't ever buy a truck from heavychevy79"

Crossy- I'm digging the mix-n-match fasteners holding the lights in place. Looks like they used what ever was laying on the shop floor. I'll bet there are some drywall screws involved.

The crew cab I just bought had terrible wind noise on the passenger side.Found the po had the wing window held on with bailing wire.I took off the bailing wire, found the window was broke were it attached to the door.I installed a machine srew in the top,Closed the window and put a small bead of black silicone around it.Now it's as quite as my 02 avalanche.

KEEEEEEEEN eye ken. some were bent at 45* angle to come out correctly - i swear i was so proud i could have cried that not one single sheet rock screw was used. All MACHINE screws. None the right size, but machine screws none the less.
Oh- and there was some guitar string looking wire back there too>

Re: previous owner funny fixes?

Kid I know is building a 69 mustang as his first car. Tells the shade-tree bodyman his dad hired that he wants a spoiler on the back. This guy sprayed several cans of foam filler on the trunklid and started sanding. After some fiberglass and bondo later it looks pretty close. We will see how it holds up.

Re: previous owner funny fixes?

when I got my truck, every thing was spray painted inside and out except the wheels, there was big slaps of bondo covering up dents, and trim holes, the front shocks were broke and part of it was missing, none off the bolts were tight on the motor or transmission brace, the wiring was a mess and I fixed It as best as I could but finally got tired of it since half of it was shorted out, so I decided to put a new harness in, and also the transmission was full of grass

Re: previous owner funny fixes?

OK, I tried to keep my mouth shut, but I can't.

67 Biscayne, rear quarters rotted, got tired of my stuff getting wet. 1 roll hardware cloth 20 wood screws and 2 gallons of roofing cement later, no more problem. Car used 1 qt 20w50 every 100 miles, burned some, trew most. At 400K + miles, had never had the head off or oil pan down, had 8:1 in #5, 2:1 in #2, and the other 4 holes has about 5:1. Kid that bought it (for$50!) raced the cops into a corn field and the frame and body broke in half - frame at rear upper control arms and the body at the rear floor seam.

Bought a 75 Lemans Sport Coupe when I graduated from college. Ran good but the 260 Olds leaked from the valve convers. Pulled them, found them packed with sand, they had run with no PCV breather for 50K miles. Took a steel rod and 3 gallons of diesel to open the oil drains, took over a coffee can of sand out of the engine, filled with 2 qts diesel and 3 oil, drove 10 minutes, changed oil, repeated 6x changing fileter every 3rd time, then drove the thing for 50k more, only issue with engine at 200k was timing chain and cam lobes.

Same car, drove in the rain, got wet from both sides and floor, replaced floor with steel roofing, put eavestrough in both doors wil liberal roofing cement, problem solved.

We got rid of our 69 P/U when the cow went thru the bed floor....

my 66 Belair I paid $50 for, put $50 control arm and support on, $50 alignment, bent frame caused major camber/caster issues, would feather edge right front tire every 3000 miles, would rotate tires, then when all 4 has has their turn would reverse them on the rims.

I ran my dad's 50k take-off tires on my cars until the cords showed (hint - Firestones fail the sidewalls before the cord shows. Trust me on this).

Need I continue?
