wheel bearing lock nuts
I just picked up a set of wheel bearing lock nuts for the front spindles on my k-20. I don't have a thrust washer in new set or in the can that I dissasembled with all of the old parts. The one used to set against the outer bearing cone and then the nut goes against that. Since the nuts are hardened, are they the thrust surface and there is not a washer???
The inner nut has a small pin for the lock ring to set over and they have 4 slots on the outside for a wrench. then there is an outer lock nut. I assume the inner nut is also the thrust surface for the bearing since it is hardened? Anyone know for sure??

any 4x mechanics ran into this question?
I do truly believe there is no seperate washer and that the nut draws up against the bearing itself. The Jeeps I have worked on through the years use a hardened thrust washer up against the bearing and soft hex nuts. The new nuts are rather tight as well. I filed the roots of the threads to help and the new nuts now fit tight but not as extreme as at first. While we're on the subject, how many different methods of bearing load setting can we come up with?? I usualy turn em up to tight and then back off to the very first hole in the lock ring.

No washer in there.
The wheel bearing should have .000 to .005 end play. Or i torque it to 35ftlb while spinning the wheel. Then back off 1/4 turn. Then tighten till the in and out play just goes away.

thanks for confirming that there is no inside thrust washer. I figured as much since all of the parts were thrown in one can when I took it apart...............but, in my experiences , sometimes there seems to be a way that parts grow there own legs and wander off!!

There was no thrust washer on my Dana 60 only the inner nut, lock ring, outer nut.
