Help with new vent window rubber
Need help with the new vent window seal I got from LMC. I have an 85
K10 and the old seal was 2 pieces with the back side having tangs to hold it to the vent rail. This one is one piece, has no tangs on the back side AND we're having trouble getting the rest of it to stay seated into the rail. It did'nt come with any instructions. Any hints or suggestions would be greatly appreciated. mike 85 K10 project |

Re: Help with new vent window rubber
You may have the wrong rubber kit, 73 to 80 are 2 piece, 81 up are 1 piece, has a po swapped out the vent window assemblies?

Re: Help with new vent window rubber
'85 Should be a one piece. He has a '85. It should have had a one piece when he took it out. The PO must have put in the wrong one (a two piece). Anyway, something is wrong.

Re: Help with new vent window rubber
Thanks for reply, I don't know if it was replaced but the back rail does have the slots for the tabs to be pushed thru and bent over to lock in. I was working on passenger door 1st so I can take off the rubber on driver's door and see if it is different. So is that back rail just glued down?

Re: Help with new vent window rubber
I have never done this but sure you have to get the rivets to install the rubber. I would think LMC would have these and the punch to install the rivets.

Re: Help with new vent window rubber
My '87 has the two piece seal and I'm the original owner (never been changed out).
Do you suppose there was some difference between assembly plants? K

There must be because I have checked with po and this was original rubber. I feel sorry for anyone trying this job.

Re: Help with new vent window rubber
Crap, hate to hear that...my drivers side vent window makes an ungodly noise. If I could get it fixed, my truck would be relatively quiet. Is it body shop time?

Re: Help with new vent window rubber
When I installed that new rubber it was like it was too small. You get one part seated good and work your way around and the other end would be pulling out already. AND it still made noise after putting it in. Wish somebody could find a part for these vents that worked right besides sealing them shut.

Re: Help with new vent window rubber
I'll put new vent assemblies in before I put on the LMC rubbers again...

Re: Help with new vent window rubber
Thanks, guys. Got 'er done this weekend.
It wasn't too bad: I was able to replace the vent window without pulling the door glass. The hardest part was getting one of the phillips screws loose! I also replaced all the rubber on the driver's door. The LMC rubbers fit the vent window pretty well; it was a little tricky getting the rubber on the window track at the rear of the door and the attachments didn't quite line up with the slots in the door itself but not bad considering. By the way, my truck had the two piece setup on the driver's door and a one piece seal on the passenger door. I'm thinking the driver's side might have been changed out during the time my Father-in-law had the truck (and that the passenger side is original). K

Re: Help with new vent window rubber
I have an 84 GMC shortbed and I have bought the new window and vent seals from LMC for it. Also my vent seal is one peace. Do you guys know if you have to remove the pivet rivet and the vent window to remove the vent seal? It appears you do and I've never done such a thing so I'm not sure where to start. I know you can buy new rivets from LMC but I've read on here that you need a spiecal rivet tool.

Re: Help with new vent window rubber
I can't comment because I replaced the whole assembly (I didn't dissassemble the glass/pivot from the frame).

Re: Help with new vent window rubber
Thanks K for your replay. Okay so the 90-91 window vent assembly I see is the simpliest fix but ok i have dump question. Does this assembly come with the window vent (glass) and everything? I think i've already answer my question but i'm just asking.

Re: Help with new vent window rubber
To replace the seal you have to take the vent window apart and drill out the rivets, only drill out the pivot and the rivets holding the rear rubber, when you buy a rivet kit it should come with a punch.

Re: Help with new vent window rubber
My 84 GMC has two rubber pieces rubber one. I removed the pivot rivet by cutting the head/top off with my dremel tool. I started to grind the bottom of the rivet first but it was not working to well. Looked like I would damage the arm so I went for the top since there was enough room for the cut wheel to fit between the head and the arm. Anyway I got the vent window off the frame and noticed the rubber was two pieces instead of one. My looks like the LMC parts for a 73-80 instead of 81-87. LMC's or GM's fault, I don't know but I wished I never started this. Guess I'll have to call LMC and exchange them. In the first pic here the far right is the new single piece.

Re: Help with new vent window rubber
Where can I get the punch and pivot rivet? I have an '87 with 2 piece seals on both sides too.
I just got off the phone with LMC and they don't have a listing for the tool, just the rivet. Any other recommendations? Last edited by nlped; 07-17-2009 at 10:57 AM. |

Re: Help with new vent window rubber
Keith - You say you removed the vent assembly without having to remove the door glass? Can you share any tips on doing that? My drivers wing leaks like sieve, and I have a good Suburban wing that I want to swap out.
nlped - LMC has the hinge rivet, p/n 30-0519. It seems to me I have heard people used regular pop rivets for the rubber-to-frame.

Re: Help with new vent window rubber
www.cheyennepickup.com
Part number VT835, $5.00 Or you can make one out of a piece of 1/4" or 3/8" round bar and dremmel out a concave part in one end. You'll probably want some sort of buck to use on the back side too, such as a hammer or a thick piece of steel. Something for the rivets to back up against as you hit then with the rivet tool

Worst case you may have to remove the rear window channel to allow the glass to slide rearward in the track. I know I had that out to replace the rubber but I just can't remember if that was part of the vent window R&R or not.... K

Re: Help with new vent window rubber
Thanks Keith!
Now, get this. I looked at the door glass weatherstrip on my 85 (not the vent window, but the strip that runs along the top and down the back side on into the door), and it also has a one-piece on the passenger side, and a 2-piece on the drivers side. This seems to be a common theme lately, along with mix-matched vent rubber too.
