whats the best way
Whats the best way to remove the tranny crossmember? Can you unbolt it?

You have to unbolt it. If I recall correctly, it's got 4 bolts on each side (2 on the upper part of the frame and two on the lower) for a total of 8. If the crossmember hasn't been out before they may be so covered with crud you can't even see them. You'll need a wrench on both the bolt head and the nut on the other end. Once all the bolts are out, just tap on the front of one side with a hammer, and on the back of the other side, and it'll come out.

Mitch if I remember right your truck was a standard trans truck. ? If so you are no doubt referring to the crossmember under the bellhousing part of the standard trans. That one should be riveted in. That pretty much calls for a cutting torch or hammer and chisel.

Just removed the crossmember for my 4speed, it sits closer to the engine than the automatic tranny crossmembers. It had rivets. I used a die grinder and a 3" cutting wheel to cut the rivets. Lotta fun
 Couldn't get to the side of the rivets near the firewall so I cut them into pizza slices and chiseled them out.
