vortec/ blazer tank
Heres what I have. A 1996 5.7 vortec sitting in the front of my frame, and a blazer tank kit in the back. The question is, should I use the sender that came with the tank kit to be the proper ohms for my factory 69 gauge, and install a frame mount fuel pump? If thats my best option what would be best pump to use? Thank you for your time.

Cliff tells me that I need an in tank pump. He said it will work fine UNLESS I let the tank go below 1/4 full. Then I will have fuel starvation problems.
He told me to get a newer Blazer tank made for EFI [w/ baffles] to eliminate all problems, so that's what I am going to do. Since Cliff is an ASE certified mechanic who works on everything from Chevy's to exotics, I trust him over most others I talk to.

Check the OHMS on the sending unit it should be fine as long as it is of our year group. I used I think a delco pump. First installed on r/h fender well had problems getting it to reprime moved it to frame works great. Good Luck.

Pump needs to be in the tank. Thats what keeps the pump cool. In the tank for sure

Its a 67-72 blazer tank with a 0-90 ohms sender.

Fuel injected engines should have pump in tank, always ! It may run with the pump on the frame, but you will put unneeded strain on the pump ( liquid is easier to push than pull) If you want to do it right put it in the tank with a baffle and sump if possible?, and it's a good Idea to NEVER let it get down to 1/4 tank.

The Blazer tank I have has never had gas put in it before, so I even thought about cutting another hole in it and mounting my 96 in tank pump into the tank and using it as strictly a fuel pump (the pump that came out of the truck the engine is from), and having the 0-90 ohm sender (that came with the tank) also as strictly a sender and plugging off the fuel like on it. I'm just thinking out loud but I know that pump is the adequate fuel pressure for the vortec because it all came from the same truck, and the 0-90 ohm sender will work my 69 gauge. I wish someone made an in-tank pump with adequate pressure for vortec with a 0-90 ohm sender to fit in the Balzer tank. I hope that make sense.?! Probably dont, Im tired.

Your best bet is to get a tank made for efi. The 89 blazer tank has the correct sender and pump.

Larry,
That is what I am doing with my LT1 install. Bought a new tank with a new sender for my 72 Blazer. I am going to install a drop in pump with slosh pan in the tank, I will post a link for the one I have found. It is a little pricey compared to robbing one out of a Fi car. but I think the $100 is worth the safety. I've heard the "Don't let it get below 1/4 tank thing" MANY times. So, I took it to heart. Makes sense to me, more fuel = a covered pump surrounded by a cooler fuel. So in my silverado and my wifes corolla we don't let the fuel get much below 1/4 tank. I've read many complaints of the silverado fuel pumps dying early on other websites and mine has 118K on it and the 'yota is up to 112K. Not sure if I'm lucky or there really is something to that advice.
I'd recommend in tank as well.

That's only for the in tank pump without baffles. If you don't have baffles the pump can go dry if you turn a corner fast or slosh the fuel around too much.
The wife has a 98 S10 and we never fill it at 1/4 tank. I guess I stand corrected on the pump part of the 89 Blazer tank. I am not an expert on EFI by any means. So what is the PSI of the 89 pump?

So here is a really dumb idea, but think about this one. Get a small tank that ships with some trucks from the factory. It is like 3 or 4 gallons. If I remember it has a fuel pump in it. Put it in between the engine and the blazer tank (in line). Run a low budget low pressure external fuel pump from the blazer tank to the new tank. This keeps fuel in the small tank (swirl pot) at all times and keeps the pump from running low on fuel. the low pressure pump keeps it full. This is the way early fuel injections worked without baffles. Just an Idea.

an 89 pump (TBI) runs at 9 to 13 PSI. they were used from 87 through 95. then in 96 they went to multi port (vortec).

Yea. I was told that the 96 sender/ pump was a different ohm sender and my gauge would not be right. See Im using the wiring harness from the 96 silverado that the engine came out of. So that would be great if the sender was the same ohms. I could just modify the blazer tank to put that unit in it and it would be the correct pressure for the engine. Both senders are very close to the same height. I would like to use what I have, but its gonna have to work right.
