How wide wheels can you go on a 69 SWB

Shopping for wheels/tires and wondering if how wide one can go without rubbing or any issues?

I'm thinking 9.5's rear and 8.5's front.

also, how do you measure the width of your wheels as it sits. do you have to remove the tires from the wheel to measure the width or do you include the tire width in the measurement?

TIA

Re: How wide wheels can you go on a 69 SWB

Hey bro! Haven't seen you around in a while! I actually started a thread recently asking the same thing and got a lot of varied responses. It's going to depend on how much drop you're planning (if any) as well as the diameter of the wheels and tire sizes. I had people telling me that they were running 10" wide wheels on the front and 11" wide wheels on the back with no issues.....but who knows! Here's a link to the thread I started.

On a '69 you have to watch backspacing on a 9.5". The '67 - early '70 have a 1.5" narrower rearend, and the tires will rub the inside of the wheel tubs on the bed. My 275/60's on 8 Rallys was very close to rubbing on my '69 before I put 1.5 spacers on it.

Re: How wide wheels can you go on a 69 SWB

i have a 69 swb fleetside, its got 10 " wide rims all the way around.

the tires on the back are 12.5 wide, and the fronts are 11.5
they are 33 and 32 inches tall respectively

no lift, and no drop, and its a 2wd.

the front tires MIGHT rub, i have yet to find any concrete evidence, but some times, when the moon is aligned with the stars, it just feels like they do

im not really a fan of tires that big, but id say thats the biggest you can fit, both width and height wise.

wow, thank you for the info But, if i want to know what i have currently, do i just measure across the tread of the rear to tell me the width or do i have to take the tires off? i know my fronts rub when i crank the wheel but i like how they fill my wheel wells

I'd stop by your local tire store and have them bring out their tool they use to check wheel widths before balancing. They should be able to tell you in just a sec how wide your wheels are.

Re: How wide wheels can you go on a 69 SWB

I have a '69, with ECE disc conversion up front. I'm running Wheel Vintiques vette-style rallye wheels all the way around, with 8-inch wide wheels up front that have a 4-inch backspace. In the rear, they are 10 inches wide and have a 5-inch backspace. Front tires are 245-60 x 15 and rears are 275-60 x 15. Front is dropped 2.5 inches w/spindles. Rear down 4-inches w/springs.

Hope this info helps.
