okay,,,well i have NO parking brake....

crawled under there but didnt really see anything and wanted to go drive around, so i did lol....but how do u tighten it..like to get it working properly cause ive needed it a few times already..but i ditched tightening it and deicded to cruise around and take a few pics and have a chat with an older fella that had a 1960..some kinda mopar golden commander? i think thats right....it was REALLY nice...i stoped because he had a 68 gmc and a 71-72 swb lowered with big drag slicks on back that doesnt have a motor...i forgot to ask him if he'd sell it or part it out
(for disc brakes lowering spindles) well heck for the swb maybe even!

didnt get alot of pics of other peoples stuff but heres a few i took

well i'll try to get pics later they dont wanna upload...lol

When you crawl under the truck with the wheel chocked and brake off there is a all thread rod, I think it's on the drivers side it will have double nuts on it. Tighten them up to get all the slack out of the cable, but leave just enough so it's relaxed until you set the brakes. You may want some one to sit inside while you do this and try them every so often as you tighten the nuts up.

The rod should be right there on the drivers side under the floor inside the frame rail basicly. My 71 is anyway.

have you taken the drums off to check the condition of brake shoe material if any// have you checked to see if the self adjuster star wheel is working properly?

You can't be stupid on something if you've never done it before.
Everybody has to start some place.
If you haven't checked any of the stuff mentioned you need to. Either take it to a shop and get them to or have maybe a friend or someone you trust that knows mechanic's to look with you and show you what you need to look for.
If you have a high school mech shop close by talk to the teacher and see if they will help you.

ha im in high school

now, ive done fourwheeler drum brakes...i know there quite a bit the same..havent checked the brake shoes..

self adjuster starwheel....is that the lil thing u can adjust the brakes wtih or no..im fellin the answer isgonna be no lol

Yes that's the adjuster. Inspect the shoes just as you would your four wheeliers. If there is concern change them.

Now for the cable again. If you get under the truck and the cable is floppy loose then you need to tighten it up good. These old cables will stertch over 40 years.
You may want to try a look in the F&Q section on brakes also.

As long as it holds the truck on a hill is good in nuetral.

Start with your favorite rust dissolver product first. Those jam nuts are really easy to round off.

I assume that you have a 68. The manual states you should pull the brake handle out 4 clicks from the released position. Then tighten the adjuster on the cable until it is snug. This way when you release the e-brake handle the cable will relax enough to keep the brake shoes from dragging on the drums.
Good luck.
PS. I would check the condition of your rear brakes first and then adjust the star wheel first before adjusting the parking brakes.

Thats funny. When I had my truck inspected last year, the person said that it had to hold the truck still while in drive at 1500 rpms. Of course I'm in Texas, so that may just be a state thing.
