Talking to a guy the other day and he said he had a over-drive for our vintage trucks...did GM ever offer that option?

YES, my 67 had it and I wished I never sold it. It had like a brake release handle on the dash that kept in or out of over drive.

67 for sure was an option. It was a 3 speed manual with OD. I think you could get it in 66 also. Not sure about other years.

how much did you gain with the od? is only for the manuals? if he were to sell it what's it worth?

it is a very weak out dated piece. Only with the 250 and 307 engines. You automaticly got 4.10 gears, so your freeway RPMs were about the same if you just got 3/73s and a non overdrive.
Common in the 60's in cars.

I had one in my 67 and I was pretty sure that engine was a 283. If you click on the words that say 67 OD, there are a few pics of the OD while it was still in the 67...When you get there go to the right where it says albums and then click on show all albums. You will find some pictures there.

The o/d combined with 4.10 rear gave a final drive at about equal to 3.08s.So,you got more grunt,but could cruise with a hiway gear.

GM put the o/d's in vehicles up
to '69. They were Borg Warner units that bolted to a Saginaw 3 spd. and some Muncies. The 7 bolt side cover Saginaws were the syncro transmissions (most sought after) and the earlier 4 bolt side cover units were the non-syncho trans.
Here's one I rebuilt.

Assuming the o/d ratio is the typical 0.73:1, then Tim is right. Actually, it will spin a few less rpm with the o/d than direct drive with 3.08s.

with baseline of 65 mph and assuming 31" tires, the 3.08 rpm would be 2,170.

with o/d and 4.10, the rpm is 2109.

I have one in my 68. Kind of a neat feature if I can ever get it working. It didn't work when I got it, and I haven't been able to get it working yet. Parts seem to be nearly impossible to find. If anyone knows of a complete rebuild kit (especially the electrical components) let me know.
