wiring harness help
went out to start my truck (69)and it wouldnt start. It turned over the first time but then nothing after that. I got under the dash and the harness looked like the wires melted together so obviously something is shorting out. I think. I yanked that harness out and replaced it with a harness that came out of my 68 and same thing. I have power to the hei, nothing at the fuse block. Will the safety switch have to be plugged in? What can you tell me about the wire colors that run to the ignition? I do remember the capacitor or whatever that thing is on the core support was not plugged in before when truck started so I dont think thats the issue. What can you guys make out of this problem? Would i need a harness out of a 69?
Much help appreciated.

Re: wiring harness help
I show power at the batt terminals if clipped directly but then ground to the frame or other spots and touch the pos. side of batt and it powers up on and off. Hei has power. No horn no turn signals or lights. Its a big mess

Re: wiring harness help
I wouldn't mess around with the old wires. Sounds like you are lucky that a fire didn't start up. You have a dead short somewhere. It could be the purple starter wire is shorted against the motor somehow. I am having to completely rewire a 72 Blazer here because the owner tried to patch the wiring together and it wouldn't start, nor would the brake lights and right rear turn signal work. Replace the wiring with new and save yourself the headaches of trying to chase wiring gremlins around. WES

Re: wiring harness help
I hate trying to trouble shoot wiring with words but,
Do you have the second wire off the positive side that goes to the little junction on the passenger fender? My truck wont start unless it's connected but causes the poss. battery terminal to get hot. Also check the jumper connection on the starter, mine has two copper leads comming from the selonoid, make sure that is good and tight... Last edited by Kayotic; 03-18-2009 at 03:59 PM. |
