flush out brake lines
I want to flush out my brake lines 72 Chevy and I was going to blow the lines out with air. Can I blow them out from the bleeders to the master cylinder? I am going to take master cylinder off. Or do I need to blow it towards the bleeders on the wheel cylinders?

you'd need to disconnect both ends of the brake line to avoid problems

Get one of these and it is a snap. Great for bleeding them also. I paid about 80 bucks for mine.

if you feel you gotta blow them clear, then I would recomend replacing them.
If you just wanna remove the old fluid, then I would gravity bleed them with fresh fluid going in the master cylinder. If you are dead set on doing it your way, I would blow from top to bottom for 2 reasons. A) gravity... if you blow from bottom to top, the fluid will want to go down due to gravity and you'll be fighting it to shend it up. B) Brake fluid will ruin any paint it sits on. Blowing it down to where there is no paint makes more sence to me than spitting it all over an engine and fire wall and what ever else is sitting in the area. (tool box, wife's car, the house, getting it in the wife's eyes... what ever) |

I recommend a 25 buck hand vacuum pump. Just bleed the brakes until you get good clean fluid coming out the bleeder. You can also just use gravity, but the hand pump makes it easy to see whats coming out. MityVac is the brand name, but it is sold under various generic names also.

Gravity bleeding with fresh fluid is the best way to go here. Blowing through small lines like this can casue bigger problems than you started with. If there is anything in the lines (rust flakes, whatever) the immediate rush of air will ball it up into a clog.

I replace master cylinder and booster, rear wheel cylinders and rebuilt front calipers blew and cleaned out brake lines. I will fill and bleed next weekend.
I am now at the place I will start putting everything back together. Hope to have it to painter by end of month! |
