axle center section swap

I have a 1969 rear end with a 3.73 posi setup and 6 lug. I also have a 1980 axle with an open diff. 2.76 and 5 lug. They are both 12 bolt axles. I would like to use the correct axle for my truck.... the 1980. Is there a way to take the gears and center section out of the 69 and install it in the 80? Thanks for any help.

I'll let someone else give you the for sure it will work answer, but I am 99% positive that you should be able swap the carrier, ring and pinion to the 1980 axle.

Swapping gears is a job that is best left to a professional. It is a very exacting and tedious process....but getting someone to swap "used" gears is nearly impossible.
If the 3.73 housing is in good shape and the posi unit is good, it may be more cost effective to get yourself some 5 lug axles for it. Then swap entire housings. You can do all of the work on the housing while it is out of the truck, which makes for a quick swap.
