tranny for 68 chevy pu
Hi all just joined today . my name is roger im 54 and live in ks.I have a 68 c10 chevy with the new process 435 tranny . It is stuck between 2nd and third gear and cant get it to free up. I can get the top cover lifted up about a inch or two but can not get it to come off. my understanding is it has to be shifted in the reverse position to come off. any advice on getting it unstuck so i can shift it .The syncros had been acting up for awhile before it got stuck so I dont think it is anything major that caused the hanging up .Also this tranny has the granny gear for first, is there another tranny that will bolt up and have a higher top end. Thanks in advance. Roger

Welcome to the Forum!
I have rocked the truck while smacking the levers with a mallot. Both levers got engaged so I had to figure out which one would disengage the easiest.

Re: tranny for 68 chevy pu
Are you sure its a NP 435. The NP 435 has an aluminum cover and should come right off. Most of the 68 up Chevs. had the SM465. It has to be half way into reverse to remove or replace the cover. Remove the gearshift lever by putting a pair of pliers on the coller. Push down & turn it about an eight in. turn counterclockwise. The handle should come out. Then you might be able to go into the hole with a big screwdriver & move the rails to get them lined up.

X2 Excellent advice.
It's called getting one cross-shifted, by the way. And to the board, from the Kansas City area.

Re: tranny for 68 chevy pu
wrenchbender I think you may be correct. just looking at the cover gasket on the pics at novak conversions I believe the cover was not square (np 435) but had a angle on the left uppper side (sm465). I have off today and will check in a few hours and let you know for sure. Thanks Roger

Re: tranny for 68 chevy pu
wrenchbender it is a sm465 tranny , thanks. now the question is should i get a used tranny or have this one rebuilt? Any one have a ball park price to have the tranny rebuilt? If i go with a used one it seems that there was a early version from 68-78, and a later version from 79-91. will either one work or do i need to stay with the earlier one? And lastly (for now) I cant get the cover to go back down to try the rocking trick. The rear of the cover seems ok but something up front is keeping the cover from going down. I have only lifted the cover up about a inch or two and never forced it very hard. Any thoughts on what could be holding the front of the cover up? Thanks again Roger.... edit:found this and it looks the 2wd tranny is the same from 68-91 other than some internal changes. http://www.novak-adapt.com/knowledge/sm465.htm am i reading that correct?
