Good Day, Bad Day at the wreckers!!

So I'm at my local wrecking yard (pick your part) just about to pull a 1" swaybar off a 69 truck and an oldtimer comes over and we start shooting the breeze (just love talking to these guys) anyway he says theres a 1 1/4" bar on a 1 ton back near the front (which I overlooked) so I thanked him kindly and go over and pull the bar (no biggie) and I proceed to get the brackets off things are going great!!! I go to bang away on the last rivet head and PAFF!!!!!!!!!!! I completely missed the head of my chisel and hit the back of my right hand full revs with my sledge. Yep fractured hand but the swaybar and brackets only came to $ 13.00 cnd (LOL) !!! Just had to share this with ya, Later Doug

All Hobbys come with a price-LOL last weekend my wife and i were out catching rattlesnakes,i was riding on the side of the truck bed trying to scout for them,she turned real hard to miss a hole in the road,swerved and hit the breaks well i flew off about 10 mph from the truck bed,tumbled numerous times on the dirt/rocks and glass resulting in a nasty cut leg(i picked alot of glass out of my knee cap,and gravel,i had glass in both palms,cut my side.a week later i can hardly move my leg,and arm without excrutiating pain.another one was when i was changing the water in my Sidewinder Rattlesnakes cage,i thought he was in his little hide cave,well he was buried under the sand i reached in and POW,Rattlesnake bites not good,i hesitated on going to the Dr,i actually fell asleep,luckily i woke uo-i guess i wasnt envenomated if i was i wouldnt of woke up.Well i still keep,and collect them guess ill never learn.Ive done the miss the chisel nail the hand thing before your not alone!I just prefer to let vice grips hold the chisels now.

I have done that also. And like DesertRat, I now use vice grips to hold the chisel.

Man that brings back bad memories of my day's of house rebuilding. Ok I'm trying to put some 2x4's together in our kitchen and guess who used too long of a screw. And then the wife say's the cordless has a reverse dosen't it? Like the other poeple have said every hobby has it's price. Take care and hope your hand feels better.

What did you use to get the rivets off? Just a chisel and sledge? I was there two weeks ago doing the same thing, but wasn't prepared to find all of them had rivets...what kind of chisel did you use?

kind of reminds me of when a FRIEND and I were taking the wheels off a vehicle out back. and yes we owned it. I had the wheel and tire off. I get the other one back on. kneel down beside the tire so I can get leverage on it. look up after the last lugnut and say ok lets get out of here. dude drops the jack. the tire lands on my leg. and the truck rolled forward off of me. thank god it was just a little chevy luv. no matter I ACCIDENTALLY let the cherry picker down holding the motor and tranny up in the same truck while he was reaching behind the motor for something. revenge is so sweet. neither one of us ended up in the ER so its all good. hope the hand feels better soon man. guess I dont have to tell you that sh*t hurts huh?

Man that sucks I've got a old sledge mark on my left hand too, you haven't bin mechanicin till you sledge you hand, I use the old visegrip method now, I've seen those chisels with the rubber handle that covers your hand got to get me one.

hey heres an idea. find someone you can stand but dont really like a whole lot and have them hold the chisel.

LOL!!! Great replies, I really like this vicegrip idea! (lol) Mandaren67: I used a hacksaw blade and a thick glove and sawed the top rivets approx. 1/2 way and used a "cold chisel" with a 1" wide blade and hammered on them till they were off and used a centerpunch and banged them straight through the frame. Took awhile and some elbow grease but next time I'd bring a cordless drill with 2 batteries and sharp drillbits and drill them out , regards Doug

Sorry to hear it, but man is that sway bar gonna be awesome ..

I was doing a head gasket on a mitsubishi and was resting
the head on the front end. I lost my grip on it and it fell to
the ground. I tried to break its fall and it landed on the top of my,
fracturing three fingers on my hand.

When I recovered from the shock of it, I got a mad and threw
a hammer at the wall, which bounced off and landed on the
hood and fender...(Dent!!)

Owww! I guess that's something you don't do twice, hope it heals quick.

I was taking my old Triumph Spitfire apart, heaved on the headers to get the past the frame and snapped one of the branches off. I was so p***ed that I turned round and kicked the wriggly tin lined barn door, forgot I wasn't wearing my steel capped boots and fractured my big toe. This last Friday I was cleaning up some parts with a wire brush in my angle grinder, as I was locking up the garage afterwards noticed a sharp pain in my belly and found a steel bristle had broken off the wire brush and embedded itself 1/4 of an inch in my gut (thank god for my extra "padding", it never reached anything vital!)

I also learnt the value of eye protection a few years ago when I got a face full of grit working on my mother-in-laws kitchen extension (knocking a doorway through the three foot thick stone wall of her 300 year old cottage.) I had to go to the hospital and have some bits of grit dug out of the surface of my eye with a hypodermic needle. Always wear gloves and eye protection!
