E85

Looked and could not find anything about this. I see that Demon, Holly, Quick fuel Etc...are all making Carbs that are E85 ready. I know that E85 is higher in Octane (101?). Has anyone tried to use E85 in their trucks?. If so let us know the outcome. Ronnie

There are posts out ther but you know it can be mixed with regular fuel right? Also unless you have 11:1 theres really no need for e-85 or boost or nos. I was contemplating running it but havent had a problem to where I need it yet but I think I will splash some in from now on and run more timing if I need too.

I am getting ready to build my motor. I am thinking of building it with more compression now since E85 is so available to me.

If I stay N\A I am going to get a rering kit and some new .125 up slugs for a comp ratio of 11.2-1 then e-85 on top.

i'm not very educated on E85, but i thought a motor running on e85 got less mpg than even 87oct if e85 is 110oct how is that possible educate me please, wouldn't everyone build a motor to run on e85 if it made more hp?

e85 isn't everywhere, so when a regular engine is built to accept both, it can't be built with the benefit of high compression, because it still needs to run on reg. 87.

I don't know, but would think that if you did build an engine for e85, you should be able to take advantage of the high compression, and make something much more efficient than the flex-fuel cars we see now.

You are correct, E85 will get worse fuel economy than gasoline. This is because even though it's octane rating is much higher (over 100) than gasoline, E85's energy content is much lower than gasoline. One gallon of gasoline contains about 125,000 BTU where that same gallon of E85 only contains ~80,000 BTU. This means it takes about 1.5 gallons of E85 to take you the same distance as 1 gallon of gasoline.

That is what I was thinking. If I am building a 600-700 horsepower big block then mialege is the least of my worries.

With compression basically equal to free horsepower, I'd be interested to see what you can do to a stock engine with lots of compression running on e85 as far as MPG goes.

Is there any concern of ethanol production decreasing, I build ethanol refining tanks until two years ago when the gov. stopped subsadizing them. A plant near us was supposed to be built but the backing went away. I know it takes 1.5 gal of crude product to produce 1 gal of ethanol and approx 4 gal of water. I guess you could always run race fuel if ethanol went away.
