Why the gold paint under the red?

the red is a candy, you put the lighter brighter base colour down then the candy over the top..

I like when candy fades and the base starts showing on old work.I had candy tangerine laquer (gold base) on a`55 Hydra-Glide that looked like a custom fade job,peach with richer tangerine the farther down the side.
