Free 12-bolt rear - Kansas City area

Free 12-bolt rear. It's a put-together Frankenstein, but restorable if somebody feels so inclined. Probably more appropriate for a parts rear.

Here's what I know about it:
1. Removed from the project truck I'm building. It ran and drove fine.
2. Open rear; not a posi.
3. Narrow housing; correct for a truck up to about 70 & 1/2.
4. Has wide 5X5 axles installed in it.
5. As a result of points 3 & 4, the drums hang a third of the way off the shoes.
6. Brakes are trash. Cables are seized, etc.
7. Has a 1310 yoke on it.

Never bothered to figure out the gear ratio, but I can if someone want's to know. The way it drove I'm guessing it's in the low three's.

If it doesn't move here try craigslist or kcsr.org

Interesting. I'd never heard of kcsr.org. Not quite sure what to make of that site.

Anyway, I'll give it another week or so and then Craigslist it.

Why did you remove it from your truck?

Re: Free 12-bolt rear - Kansas City area

My truck started out life as a 3/4-ton. Somewhere along the way somebody turned it into a 1/2-ton. I'm restoring it back to the way it was so I hunted up a Dana 60, swapped it in and removed the 12-bolt.

Re: Free 12-bolt rear - Kansas City area

I am trying to hunt down the parts to convert a 3/4 ton to half. Do you need any more parts? Do you have anything still from the front end? I have a complete 3/4 ton with front disks, manual stearing, and rear leaf springs with a Dana 60 if you would want to trade(I know you already have a rearend).

Yeah.. lots of imports there but there are some muscle cars and trucks here and there as well.

Re: Free 12-bolt rear - Kansas City area

KCSR is all bench racing, mostly 16-17-18 year olds with fart can cars...If you want to see some nice local rides check out purposebuilt.org , but just a warning, it gets a little graphic at times, good bunch of guys who will forget more about going fast than the guys on most sites will ever know oh, and they tend to lean towards fast late model stuff, you know the ones with blue ovals on 'em "rustangs", quite a few LSx GTO ,Camaro guys though.

If you just want to get rid of that rear, I can help out, I have a trailer that is still a six bolt (leaf spring), would like to make it more common 5 bolt, I would even give you the correct six bolt axles if you know someone who can use a correct rear assembly?

Well, I already hunted up all my front end stuff. It's sitting in a big pile on the garage floor waiting for me to swap it all in there. I may not get to it for quite a while though. Things never work out as cleanly as a good, trade-for-trade swap, it seems, but thanks for the offer.

Hmm . . that sounds doable.
If it had the correct axles, I would think it'd be sellable. No, I don't know anybody who could use it, but it'd probably be more desirable if it were put together with the right parts. In fact, my son and I may use it later in a '68 if I had the right axles for it.
Shall we just trade axles?
Remember, it's a narrow housing with wide 5X5 axles stuck in it.
Works for me if it works for you!

Re: Free 12-bolt rear - Kansas City area

Mine is a P/U bed trailer, It has the six lugs in it, you can have those, I wont need them if I have 5 bolt axles to go in and it does not use brakes so it does not matter to me if they dont work .....it is a leaf spring rear or I would have already swapped it for the 5 bolt 72 rear that is setting in it... I just thought that if you had all the parts someone could use the 6 lug rear ( I hate to waste anything)

Re: Free 12-bolt rear - Kansas City area

Something just dawned on me, why can't a 3/4 inc spacer be bolted in on each side of the narrow rear ends so the 71 1/2 up axles would bolt in?

That's what I was thinkin' too and I also hate to waste anything. Even though there's still a fairly good supply of these trucks around that won't last forever. Heck, 15 or 20 years ago over here in Independence, you couldn't swing a dead cat without hitting an old Chevy pickup. Those days are gone.

The spacer idea would probably work great. Be pretty easy to do as well. The reason those later 5X5 axles work in the earlier housing is because the surface where the bearing rides is wider-- wide enough to make it work without eating anything up.

Thanks for the link.. I'll remember it. I'd register and poke around but then I'd start wanting a car to go with the pickup.. one project at a time is enough right now.
