New member, New truck, Working out gremlins
Hello Everyone,
I just recently joined the forum after getting my 66 c10 fleetside. The truck has a 305 with a 4 speed transmission. I was probably 5 minutes before I started tearing into it. Already I have the carpet and seats replaced. And plan on moving to the suspension. I've been trying to eliminate the driveline noise from the truck but really have no idea what the actual problem is. I keep hearing a whining noise when I step on the gas, but it stops when I lift off the gas.. I know its coming from the vicinity of the transmission, but I can't tell if its the throwout bearing, carrier bearing, or the driveline just makes that much noise and I just have to deal with it. I don't know how the old 4 speeds are about gear noise, but that would be my next guess. I was really hoping that when I added the carpet padding on the interior it would at least lessen the noise, but that isn't happening. I want to hear my exhaust, not the whine. Hopefully I can figure it out but its not going to stop me from enjoying the hell out of my new toy. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks |

Welcome aboard too your second home. As far as the noise, you listed all of the possibilities. Sorry I can't be of much help. If all else fails just turn up the radio. Need to post some pics before the picture police gets here.

Re: New member, New truck, Working out gremlins
I thought about just cutting off the mufflers.. That would drown out the whine..
Anyways.. Here's some pics. Don't let the picture fool you.. That green is much brighter in person Here you can see the carpet job I did, and the bucket seats I stole from a honda civic.. |

What tranny do you have in there? By the position of the shifter it looks to be a passenger car tranny. If it could possibly be a Muncie M22, that would explain the whine. Does it do it when sitting still or when driving? Oh! and welcome to the board! Nice truck!

HA, well I don't think it would be my color of choice, but I dig the styling. Nice idea for LEDs in the roll pan. The important thing is if the owner likes it or not... How about this... if it was at a car show I went to I would definatly take a few pics of it! Welcome from Athens, Alabama!

I'm not sure how much noise this tranny is supposed to make.. I didn't realize how coated in oil this thing was. Maybe the fluid in the tranny is low.. |

Re: New member, New truck, Working out gremlins
from AZ. Nice looking truck. With your tranny issue, Im going to ask the obvious. Did you check the fluid level and condition? Maybe a fresh batch would help if not.

Re: New member, New truck, Working out gremlins
Sorry it took so long to reply.. Navy isn't too accomidating with time off.. I did check the fluid level thinking that the guy who sold me the truck had been neglecting his maintenance, but it was full. As a matter of fact, as soon as I removed the plug from the side of the case it just started pouring out and made a hell of a mess. I also checked the carrier bearing while I was down there and it looked brand new.. So I guess I'll check the rear axle this weekend and hopefully I can find something.

Re: New member, New truck, Working out gremlins
Thanks for the compliments.. It does get a lot of attention. Some people love it, some hate it. As far as I'm concerned it will stay that way until I get out of the service and I can tear it down and rebuild it the way I want.
